Children get fired up on energy saving
A new series of workbooks on how to save energy in a fun and educational manner have been distributed to 85,000 primary school children throughout Northern Ireland and the border counties of the Republic of Ireland.
The booklets are bright and colourful in design and introduce the theme of energy in cartoon form with a large number of illustrations to fire the pupils’ imagination. Ten thousand CD ROMS have also been distributed as part of the initiative to save energy.
The initiative, funded by the Interreg II Programme was organised by The Western Regional Energy Agency and Network (WREAN), which covers the council areas of Omagh, Fermanagh, Dungannon, Cookstown, Strabane and Armagh, and The Donegal Energy Action Team (DEAT).
Speaking at the launch, Jack O’Connor, of the Special EU Programmes Body, which provided £100,000 funding for the initiative through the Interreg II Programme, said: “This is a beautiful set of workbooks which will make learning about energy and energy conservation easy for children. This project is an excellent example of cross-border cooperation working towards improving the environment.”
Nigel Brady, Manager of WREAN added: “The conservation of energy is becoming increasingly recognised as an important element in preventing damage to our environment. The workbooks offer the opportunity for teachers to introduce energy in an entertaining and easy to understand fashion. Feedback from our Schools Programme has been very positive and have shown the books to be a valuable resource in primary schools.”
The suite of workshops helps demonstrate to children what happens to the environment when we use energy, how to save energy at home and at school and how to measure energy. (MB)

Local businesses are set to get additional help in cutting their energy bills with the announcement of £3.6 million in funding for the Carbon Trust.
