New £15.6m Hospital Unit Opens

The new Regional Child and Adolescent Mental Health Inpatient unit at Forster Green, Belfast has been officially opened.

Health Minister, Michael McGimpsey (pictured) was on hand at Beechcroft to see how it will provide a total of 33 inpatient beds and a further five daycase beds for children and adolescents with mental health problems.

Minister McGimpsey said: "Beechcroft will provide a specialist inpatient service for children and young people with mental health problems.

"A considerable amount of work has gone into the planning, designing and building of this facility to ensure that it fully meets the needs of the children and young people who will be cared for here.

"There are a wide variety of therapeutic interventions available in the unit delivered by highly skilled staff working together to ensure that our children and young people receive the highest quality assessment, treatment and care, in a modern and safe environment."

The Adolescent Unit provides a total of 18 inpatient beds including two new intensive nursing beds to replace the existing provision of 16 inpatient beds. They are single rooms all with ensuite shower and W/C.

The Child and Family centre has 15 inpatient beds and five day hospital places, along with parents overnight stay accommodation and a family flat.

Beechcroft also has dayrooms, dining rooms, quiet areas, together with therapy and education facilities and support accommodation for the staff, catering and administration. A recreation hall and outdoor recreational area is also provided for the patients.

New Inpatient Ward Block Opens At Ulster Hospital
A new inpatient ward block has opened at the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald, Co Down. A total of £112 million was invested by the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust, and the development includes 288 single rooms across 23 wards with en-suite facilities. The new building replaces a ward block built in the 1960s.

Hospital inpatient waiting lists continue to fall
Hospital inpatient waiting lists are now at their lowest since March 2001 and have fallen by 10% over the past twelve months, it was revealed today.

Minister gets tough on waiting lists
Minister for Health, Social Services and Public Safety, Bairbre de Brún, has put hospital Trusts on notice that she expects them to deliver on waiting list targets set this year. The Minister was commenting on the latest waiting list figures, which show a 1% rise in the number of people waiting for hospital inpatient treatment.

Around 65 Beds To Go Across Northern Health Trust Area
Around 65 beds are to go across the Northern Health Trust area as part of planned cuts to services, the trust has said. 44 beds are being axed at Whiteabbey Hospital in Co Antrim. Management said the cuts were "temporary" at a public meeting in Newtownabbey on Thursday, 21 September. The beds could go as early as Novemeber.
