Retail sector to provide jobs boost in Coleraine

Over 300 jobs are to be created when Coleraine see the opening of a new shopping complex in summer 2002.

Known as the Diamond Centre, the complex has been developed by urban regeneration company CUSP, and will augment what is already a prime shopping area in the town centre.

A brand new development, the Diamond Centre is the town’s first enclosed shopping area, and upon completion, will add another 140,000 square feet of retail space to an area that already includes one of the largest Dunnes in the North. Nearby traders such as Abbey National, Iceland, Nationwide, Internationale, Argos and Superdrug will be joined by outlets for discount retailer TK Maxx and local shoe retailer Bishops.

The opening of the complex will provide a boost to the province’s retail sector during a year where little is slated to happen. The only new shopping centre due to open in 2002, the Diamond Centre will provide around 300 jobs.

Commenting on the development, Martin Quinn of letting agents O’Connor Kennedy Turtle said that the site would be built “to the highest standard of specification” and would provide “an attractive and comfortable shopping environment for the people of Coleraine”. (CL)
