Men Jailed Over Gun Smuggling Plot
Two men have been jailed at Belfast Crown Court after taking part in a dissident republican gun smuggling plot.
44 year old Paul McCaugherty of Lurgan, County Armagh, was found guilty of attempting to smuggle weapons and explosives and was given 20 years.
Dermot Declan Gregory, 42, of Crossmaglen, was sentenced to four years after being found guilty of making a Portuguese property available for the purpose of terrorism.
Mr Justice Anthony Hart told McCaugherty: "Any attempt to purchase and import such a large amount of weapons and explosives for terrorist purposes must be regarded as exceptionally serious because of the potential for murder and destruction on a large scale."
As he was taken away, McCaugherty raised one arm to pals and family and showed no emotion.
The Judge continued: "Money is the life blood of any terrorist organisation and anyone who makes property available to a terrorist organisation helps that organisation further its objectives of murder and destruction and the punishment must reflect this."

The PSNI has welcomed the sentencing of a man at Craigavon Crown Court in connection with a cannabis farm disovered in Annahilt in February, 2023. Clive Weir, from the Annahilt area, was sentenced to 18 months in prison and 18 months on licence.

Gary Haggarty, a former Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) north Belfast commander, admitted the many crimes as part of his state deal to give evidence against fellow terrorists.
