HSE Faces Dáil Accounts Committee
Officials from the Irish Republic's Department of Finance were attending a meeting of the Oireachtas Public Accounts Committee yesterday at which the Chief Executive of the Health Service Executive (HSE) and the Secretary-General of the Department of Health appeared. The committee was looking into controversial expenses highlighted by the Comptroller and Auditor General and a HSE Internal Audit Report.
They outlined a catalogue of 'waste of public money' and serious 'breaches of corporate governance' as well as 'financial oversight' and procurement.
However, the HSE Chief Executive Cathal Magee has said it was requested that trade union SIPTU reimburse expenses claimed under the controversial SKILL programme.
Mr Magee said there had been a serious breach of financial regulations at the programme and it was unacceptable and also said the steering committee of SKILL has been stood down.
The Secretary-General of the Department of Health Michael Scanlan said he accepted the terms under which SKILL got its funding were not clear.
The report, which was completed in June, investigated irregularities involving funds for the SKILL training programme for lower grades in the health service.
Some of the funds were paid into an account operated by SIPTU officials and - as a result - SIPTU lodged €348,000 with a Commissioner for Oaths to cover potential liabilities for reimbursement of expenses.

HSE Investigate Sudden Death In Co Antrim
An investigation has been launched into the sudden death of a man in Doagh, Co Antrim. Police were called to commercial premises on the Kilbride Road at about 21:00 on Tuesday. It is understood that a 57-year-old man has died. A post-mortem is due to be carried out to establish the cause of death.
