Suicide Focus As latest Victim Buried

The Sinn Fein MP Gerry Adams has commended the young people who organised last night's vigil on Wset Belfast's Whiterock Road in response to the recent deaths by suicide of three young local men.

After the latest such death Father John Forsythe, of Christ the Redeemer in Lagmore, will today say Requiem Mass at the funeral of Liam McGuinness.

The 19-year-old amateur boxer took his own life earlier this week.

His death is believed to have been the tenth suicide in the Lagmore area in recent months.

Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams said as many as 21 people have taken their own lives in the area this year and Father Forsythe said there had been a 111% increase in suicide deaths in Northern Ireland and that suicide was an issue that needed to be looked at by the whole community.

Mr Adams, as the local MP has already called on the NI Health Minister to ensure funding for suicide prevention in Northern Ireland is protected in today's Executive cutbacks.

Last night he said: "I want to commend the young people who in the aftermath of the recent suicides took the initiative to organise the vigil.

"Hundreds of people came to remember those who died; to sympathise with their families and to hear those who work in this field provide information and seek to reach out to others in need of help."
