No Vote For Prisoners: DUP

The DUP MEP Diane Dodds has responded to speculation that the Government is going to allow prisoners to vote. Mrs Dodds said that such a proposition should not go ahead: "When people are convicted of a criminal offence and sentenced to a prison term, they have certain rights that the rest of society enjoys taken away - including the right to vote," she said, branding this a "ludicrous proposition that criminals should be casting votes to elect those who make the laws that govern our society". She said it is a perfect demonstration of everything that is wrong with EU interference in domestic affairs. "If people commit a crime and are subject to due process and sentenced to a term of prison, we accept that they should lose certain rights and that should include the right to participate in the democratic process," Mrs Doods fumed. Lottery Backs Communities

The Big Lottery Fund is encouraging community groups across NI to apply for a £5m programme to make their venues more energy efficient and save money during the recession. The Energy Efficient Venues programme offers lottery cash to community groups to carry out energy efficiency improvements to their community venues to make savings on their heating and lighting costs and benefit the environment. Organisations can apply for two grant sizes through the programme. Grants of £2,000 - £10,000 are available for groups to carry out improvements such as putting in double glazing, installing or upgrading the insulation of the venue, or installing a more energy efficient heating system. Projects can include the cost of carrying out an energy audit in this grant size to find out how to make their venue more energy efficient or to pay for planning permission or building control if they are needed for a second application.
