Man Remanded As Robbery Pensioner Dies

The PSNI has launched a murder inquiry after an elderly Belfast man who tackled a robber died in hospital.

The 75-year-old - who suffered a heart attack after trying to prevent a robbery in west Belfast - died in the Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH).

Samuel Crawford was in a corner shop in Cavendish Street on Monday when a masked man entered and attempted to steal the till.

As he tried to stop the robber, Mr Crawford took a heart attack at the shop doorway and collapsed.

He was taken to the nearby RVH in a critical condition and died on Wednesday.

A 19-year-old, Darren Valliday-Smyth, of no fixed abode, has since been charged with attempted robbery, assault, and possession of a canister of CS gas.

He is alleged to have tried to steal a till from the newsagents on Cavendish Street. There was no application for bail and Mr Valliday-Smyth is due to reappear before the court via video link on the 11 November.
