Galway Jobs Fillip Welcomed

Some 50 jobs are to be created in Galway with the opening of a European operations centre by a US company.

The Enterprise Minister Batt O'Keeffe has announced that Industrial Info Resources (IIR) a "leading US market research firm" is to set up operations in Ballybrit Business Park. The full number of positions will be created over a five-year period.

The new jobs will be in research, sales, administration and management. Recruitment has already begun.

Founded in 1983 and headquartered in Texas in the US, IIR carries out in-depth market research on the industrial processing, heavy manufacturing and energy-related industries worldwide and offers knowledge management solutions to firms in those sectors. The firm is expanding to support clients globally.

The new headquarters in Galway will develop subscription-based industrial market intelligence databases on the European market and sell IIR's global capabilities to European clients.

Minister O'Keeffe described the IDA supported announcement as "another significant Foreign Direct Investment" for Galway.

"IIR's investment in Galway reinforces the western region's growing reputation as a location for high-end business services operations.

"IIR has a strong track record in the industrial market research space for over 27 years and Galway is now well positioned to play a key role in the firm's continued growth," said Minister O'Keeffe.

Meanwhile, in less positive news, Health Service Executive (HSE) management and unions are meeting at the LRC to discuss proposals to shed up to 5,000 staff by the end of the year.

The €400m voluntary redundancy and early retirement scheme initially targets managerial and administrative staff, but may be extended to support staff.

Staff have until the end of November to confirm that they want to leave the HSE, and must be gone by the end of December.

IMPACT, which represents administrative grades, said its concerns include the terms of the redundancy scheme, which it believes are inadequate.

It has also criticised the tight timeframe for imposing the job cuts, and the lack of management proposals to address gaps in the system which will emerge after the scheme is implemented.

Also, both IMPACT and SIPTU - which represents support staff - also fear that posts made redundant might be outsourced to agency or contract staff.
