COMET Lands In Belfast
Delegates from Dublin Regional Authority and four Dublin councils were in Belfast City Hall yesterday as part of a two day COMET Interreg visit. COMET (Councils of the Metropolitan Area) is a partnership within the Belfast metropolitan area which includes Belfast, Lisburn, Carrickfergus, Castlereagh, Newtownabbey and North Down councils. The programme provides support for cross-border economic development opportunities and the Dublin delegates were in the city for the formal launch of the COMET Interreg Cross-Border Partnership today. Belfast Lord Mayor Councillor Pat Convery welcomed the delegates, led by Dublin's first citizen, Councillor Gerry Breen (both pictured) where they heard about regeneration plans. The Dublin visitors were also given a tour of Belfast which took in the Cathedral Quarter and the Titanic Quarter. As part of their two day trip, the delegates from Dublin also visited the other COMET regions which included Lisburn, Carrickfergus and Newtownabbey.
Gas Blamed After Body Found
A gas leak is suspected as being the cause of death after a man's body was found at a house on Kesh Road in Irvinestown at about 11am this morning. As well as the fatality - named locally as Killian Scallon, who was in his 50s - it is understood that the woman who is also now in a critical condition in hospital is the victim's wife, Pauline. Police were still at the scene on Wednesday night and tests are to be carried out to establish what actually happened. The shocking discovery was made by the fire service after the alarm was raised.
Dissident Suspects Lifted
Eight people have been arrested and ammunition has been seized by police investigating suspected republican dissident activity in Beflast. The seven men and one woman were detained following searches at properties in north and west Belfast, Dunmurry and Newtownabbey on Monday morning. Serious Crime Branch officers also uncovered a large quantity of ammunition and a number of other items, which have been removed for forensic testing. The suspects are seven men aged between 18 and 45, and a 23-year-old woman who are being held at the serious crime suite in Antrim.
Trapped Lorry Driver Dies
A 43-year-old man - named as Declan Harvey from Lisnafin Park, Strabane - has died in an early morning traffic accident involving two lorries in Co Tyrone. It happened on the Melmount Road near Sion Mills at about 3.30am on Wednesday morning and left one driver trapped and fatally injured in his cab after it crashed off the road into a tree. Another man was taken to hospital with lower leg injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening. A police spokesperson said the road, which is part of the main route between Strabane and Omagh, was likely to be closed for some time.
Pipe Bomb Suspects Held
Last week's pipe bomb attacks in west Belfast have led to three arrests being made on Tuesday. The men - aged 24, 29 and 40 - were arrested in south Belfast and a number of houses were searched and several items including a vehicle have been taken away for examination. Six people, including a four-year-old girl and a pregnant woman - were in the house in St James' Park when the first device exploded. The other device had been left on the wall of the house of Liam Shannon, a republican who is Chair of the local Felon's Club in west Belfast.
Cllr's Death 'Saddening'
The DUP leader Peter Robinson has expressed his sadness at the news that a former DUP mayor and councillor for Castlereagh Central area, Lawrence Walker has died. Mr Robinson said: "He had been battling illness for a long time, bravely facing the ravages of cancer and was an inspiration to all. I am deeply saddened by his death." The Stormont First Minister also said that Lawrence had been dedicated to the Castlereagh area and had served the people of the community first as a council officer before entering "the political fray", being later co-opted to replace the then Cllr Peter Robinson as a Castlereagh Central representative.
SF Hosts Business Breakfast
The NI Minister for Regional Development Conor Murphy and South Belfast Sinn Fein MLA, Alex Maskey have joined their party President Gerry Adams at a breakfast briefing and discussion for business figures in Belfast. Mr Adams addressed those in attendance and outlined the recent proposals put forward by the party to help stimulate the economy. The event also allowed the business people to engage directly with the party leadership during a useful question and answers session in an event that is to be repeated with the business sector over the coming weeks.
Farmers Urged To Apply For FMP
The farming community is being reminded that the deadline is fast approaching for applications for financial support under Tranche II of the Farm Modernisation Programme (FMP). "With the closing date less than a fortnight away we are keen to remind farmers that their applications must be finalised and submitted by 4pm, on Friday, November 26," noted Dr Andrew Kerr at Countryside Agri-Rural Partnership, the FMP delivery agent. "Farm businesses with a DARD Category I Farm Business Identification Number can apply for financial support under Tranche II of the Farm Modernisation Programme and we are encouraging all farm businesses in NI to consider taking up this opportunity," he said, noting that, if farmers have any technical queries regarding FMP Tranche II items or need assistance accessing the online application system we have staff ready to assist on the Countryside Agri-Rural Partnership Helpline, telephone: 0845 0267 535.
Man Jailed For Benefit Fraud
A man was convicted at Craigavon Magistrates' Court this week for claiming benefits he was not entitled to. Frederick Hunter, 60, of Woodview Park, Tandragee claimed Income Support and Rate Relief totalling £33,117 while failing to declare capital. He was given 12 months imprisonment. He will also have to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

Heavy Snow Closes Over 80 Schools
Over 80 schools across Northern Ireland have been closed as the heavy snow continues to cause disruption on Tuesday morning. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, as the snow is continuing to affect many roads. Areas which have been majorly disrupted include Lisburn, Castlereagh and Carryduff.

National Parks: Attwood Vs The Ulster Farmers Union
The Ulster Farmers Union have come out against plans for national parks in Northern Ireland. It follows a meeting they had with Stormont's environment minister Alex Attwood earlier this week where they discussed his department's plans to set up two national parks in either the Cauesway Coast, the Fermangh Lakelands or the Mourne Mountains.
