Eleventh Hour Silence

As millions across the UK fell silent at 11am today to mark Armistice Day, an innovative 'pop record' This Remembrance Day - actually a two-minute silence to support the poppy campaign by the Royal British Legion - shot into the midweek Top 20. Meanwhile, in Belfast, as wreaths were being laid by civic representatives and Royal British Legion members this morning at the City Hall cenotaph, the leader of the nationalist SDLP revealed that she will wear a poppy while attending a Remembrance Sunday ceremony this weekend. It is understood that Margaret Ritchie will be the first leader of a nationalist party to wear a poppy. She said that she hoped it would be seen as a gesture of "reconciliation and reaching out" as some see the poppy as a controversial symbol in Northern Ireland, often dividing unionists and nationalists even though it is only sold by the British Legion in the run-up to Remembrance Sunday in November to raise money for veterans. Police Occupational Unit Accolade

Mid-Ulster DUP Assembly MLA NI Policing Board member, Ian McCrea, has congratulated the PSNI Occupational Health Unit on winning a major award at the National Business Awards in London. "To come top in the 'Health, Work and Wellbeing Award' category is truly a marvellous achievement and echoes what one of the judges remarked as pioneering work," he said, noting that the unit was established in 1986 by the RUC and has maintained a strong focus on employee well-being, which in turn helps to sustain recovery of its officers.

SDLP Student On Cuts Protest

An SDLP youth member Liam McNulty has taken part in this week's National Union of Students (NUS) demonstration in London against Higher Education funding cuts. Speaking from London on Wednesday, he said: "Students and lecturers sent a clear message to the Government. Tens of thousands of people marched to demand the sort of higher education system that both David Cameron and Nick Clegg themselves enjoyed but which they are now threatening to deny a new generation," he said. "That some students took part in civil disobedience in no way detracts from the scale of the demonstration and their actions pale in significance to the criminal damage the Tories and Liberal Democrats are about to inflict on our universities."

Young Scientists Hosted

The NI Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane, has hosted a reception for science students from across NI who entered the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition. "The importance of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) cannot be overstated. Schools which afford science and technology a priority, in both their curriculum and their extra-curricular activities, will help us create a workforce that can fill skills gaps in society and help drive our economy. They also provide our young people with the skills that they will need to take advantage of the opportunities offered by today's increasingly global economy," she said, noting the continued support for the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition.

Shop Robbery Shock

Alliance Belfast councillor Laura McNamee has expressed her shock at a robbery of a newsagents on the Upper Newtownards Road on Wednesday afternoon. A shop assistant was threatened at knifepoint before the robber made off with a sum of money. Cllr Laura McNamee said: "I am shocked that this shop was robbed in broad daylight on one of Belfast's main roads. It is deeply worrying that there has been an increase in knife crimes in recent years. I hope the police will continue to view this as an extremely serious crime and will provide resources to tackle this growing problem. My thoughts are with the shop assistant after what must have been a very traumatic experience for her. I hope she is able to get over her ordeal quickly," she said, also asking anybody with any information about this robbery to contact the police.
