UK retail sales fall in October
The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed that UK retail sales fell by 0.1 per cent in October.
Despite the fall in high street sales in October the ONS said the underlying growth rate remains healthy.
While the retail sales figures showed the first monthly fall since April 2000, ONS warned that they were skewed by a 0.1 per cent upwards revision in September's retail sales figures. Analysts expect that once these factors are taken into account the underlying trend will remain much the same as in September.
Consumers also continued to spend strongly on household goods, which saw its highest rate of sales expansion since April 1998. Overall retail sales this year were 5.7 per cent up on October 2000. (MB)
