EC Boss Wings Into Belfast

Pictured inside one of the largest autoclaves in the UK during a visit to Bombardier's new wing manufacturing and assembly facility are (left) the European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, along with Vice-President and General Manager, Bombardier Aerospace, Belfast, Michael Ryan, and Enterprise, Trade and Investment Minister Arlene Foster. The first phase of the factory is complete, and production of the advanced composite wings for the new CSeries aircraft is due to get under way in 2011.

Ballyclare Body Shock

A man's body has been found in a river in Ballyclare. The PSNI said that the discovery of the 63-year-old was reported at about 8.40am on Monday and have said that at this stage the man's death is not being treated as suspicious. He has not yet been named.

Lorry 'Road Wars'

Eight vehicles have been damaged and a set of traffic lights wrecked leading to a woman in her 40s being arrested last night. A lorry hit the cars in east Belfast on Sunday night before hitting traffic lights at Frederick Street in north Belfast before hitting a wall on the Albertbridge Road. The woman has been released pending further enquiries.

M-Way Alert Ends

Army bomb experts were called after a suspicious object was found near the Westlink entrance to the Bog Meadows on Sunday afternoon with the M1 motorway in Belfast closed for much of the day whwn a second suspicious object was later found near the motorway. A police spokeswoman said one was an elaborate hoax while the other turned out to be non-suspicious. The busy road was closed for several hours between Broadway and Stockman's Lane and caused long tailbacks for motorists.

Kyi Release Hailed By University

The University of Ulster, which awarded human rights activist Aung San Suu Kyi an honorary degree last year, has hailed her release last week as a triumph for "the resolution, dignity and grace that has marked her leadership of the pro-democracy struggle" in her native land. Professor Richard Barnett, the university's Vice-Chancellor, said: "As an institution committed to freedom of thought and dedicated to democracy for all peoples, the University of Ulster rejoices at the release of our distinguished colleague, Aung San Suu Kyi. She is a world exemplar of the power of non-violent democratic principles pursued with steadfastness, integrity and courage. We salute her as a voice of the powerless and a shining light in the struggle for human rights and justice in the face of oppression. Aung San Suu Kyi accorded our University the honour of accepting an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in July 2009 in recognition of her services to human rights.

Wilson Banks On Santander

Finance Minister Sammy Wilson has met with representatives from Santander Corporate Banking in Belfast to discuss banking issues in NI. In attendance at the meeting were Jonathan Dyer, Regional Managing Director, Peter Torrens, Relationship Director Real Estate Finance and Andrew Mulliner, Regional Director, Merseyside, North Wales & Northern Ireland. Speaking after the meeting the Minister said: "It is vital for any successful economy that a robust banking system should be in place and we need a competitive local banking sector meeting the needs of businesses and consumers here. Given that a number of our banks are Irish owned, the severity of the banking crisis in the Republic of Ireland has had a significant impact here. In that context, I very much welcome the presence of Santander Corporate Banking," he said.

Victim's Family Visited

The Health and Safety Minister Arlene Foster last week visited the Scallon family to express her sympathies following the death of Killian Scallon and wish his widow, Pauline Scallon a full recovery. She was meeting the family just before the fumes victim was buried and as the PSNI confirmed that their investigation into the incident found that Mr Scallon had died as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning. Reminding the public of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning the Minister said: "This tragic death only serves to highlight the importance of the key messages of the carbon monoxide awareness campaign, launch earlier this month."

Belfast Launch For 'Concrete' Book

Leading figures in the construction industry in Northern Ireland will find out about the creative design possibilities of concrete in construction at a special event by concrete products manufacturer Acheson & Glover. Belfast's Waterfront Conference Centre will be the venue for the book launch of 'Concrete Elegance Five' by renowned author David Bennett on Thursday, November 18th. Running over three days the event will also feature a photographic exhibition showcasing innovative concrete design in architecture. The book launch is being hosted by Co Tyrone based Acheson & Glover to celebrate 50 years in business, and will take place in front of a specially invited VIP audience drawn from the world of construction, architecture business, finance and government bodies. Guest speaker will be MLA Edwin Poots, Minister of the Environment and the aim of the event is to bring together representatives from leading industry bodies and showcase the many benefits of concrete in construction, design and architecture.

Minister Slammed For Failing To Provide Figures On Number Of Foodbanks
The SDLP has hit out at the Minister for Communities after he failed to provide figures on the number of foodbanks in Northern Ireland or the number of people using them. SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan said Minister Paul Givan "boasted" about everything he is doing to support food banks, however he was unable to confirm how many of them exist in NI.

Politicians Help 'Kick Hate Into Touch'
An innovative campaign, the 'Unite Against Hate' sporting weekend has been launched. Stormont First Minister Peter Robinson and his Junior Minister Gerry Kelly (pictured) joined forces to support the campaign which highlights all forms of hate crime and challenges people here to unite to stop it.

Heavy Snow Closes Over 80 Schools
Over 80 schools across Northern Ireland have been closed as the heavy snow continues to cause disruption on Tuesday morning. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, as the snow is continuing to affect many roads. Areas which have been majorly disrupted include Lisburn, Castlereagh and Carryduff.
