Lyric Drama Lives On As Theatre Rebuilt
As work nears completion on the new Lyric Theatre in south Belfast, ongoing work by the Lyric Drama Studio is to open its second season with drama students presenting their production of Russian playwrights The Presnyakov Brothers' black comedy Terrorism.
Part of the Lyric's Creative Learning Programme, the Drama Studio (rehearsals pictured) are performing off-site is built, in one of Belfast's newest alternative venues, the Belfast barge, or M.V. Confiance, moored alongside Lanyon Quay for a strictly limited run from 1 to 4 December.
The Lyric's Creative learning Co-ordinator Carol Moore is excited about the production and commented: "As Northern Ireland's only full time producing theatre, it is vital that we provide opportunities for the young people living in Northern Ireland, to fulfil and develop their ambitions of becoming professional actors.
"The Drama Studio offers high quality training and experience and is a key asset to the theatre," she said, noting that the Lyric Drama studio offers a programme for 18 to 25 year olds from or currently living in Northern Ireland.
"It aims to equip young actors who are serious about the profession with skills that will help them to realise their professional ambitions," she explained.
Gilly Campbell, Drama and Dance Officer, Arts Council of Northern Ireland said: "As principal funder of the Lyric, the Arts Council is pleased to support the Lyric Drama Studio in engaging local young actors and enhancing their professional skills.
"The Lyric has an excellent reputation for working with young people and thanks to public funding, that tradition is set to continue when the new theatre opens next year."

Belfast's much missed Lyric Theatre is to re-open on 1 May, and early announcements are already causing quite a lot of excitement. The theatre will open with a gala performance of Arthur Miller's influential play, The Crucible. The play examining the hellish Salem witchcraft trials is viewed as one of the greatest plays ever written.

A new £18m theatre in Belfast has been short-listed for the 2012 Stirling Prize in architecture. The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) put the new Lyric Theatre in the running for the £20,000 prize, alongside London's Olympic Stadium and Maggie's cancer centre in Glasgow.
