Sustainable Homes For Loughbrickland
Co Down is to enjoy a modest housing boost with news that many local families will next year reap the benefits of a new, shared housing scheme.
It was announced by the NI Social Development Minister, Alex Attwood who saw at first hand how the building work in rural Loughbrickland is currently progressing.
During his visit to the site, he said it would see two-dozen, high quality, family homes constructed and noted that the homes are due for completion next autumn.
He said: "These new homes will not only provide much needed housing for families in need, but will also provide a real choice for those who want to live in a mixed community. Sustainable homes help create sustainable communities.
"This scheme - at a cost of £2.6m - is about more than meeting housing need, it is also about creating a sustainable community that is welcoming to all and reflects the future of housing in Northern Ireland.
"It is said that a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step and whilst I believe we have made good progress on the journey to achieve more shared housing, much remains to be done."
Meanwhile, Tony Kennedy, Vice Chair of the Ulidia Housing Association, welcomed Minister Attwood to the site and thanked him for his support.
Mr Kennedy said: "These homes will be constructed to meet the Lifetime Homes standard, Secure by Design and the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3. They are due for completion by Autumn 2011.
"Ulidia is delighted to have the opportunity to build on its success of its Carran Crescent Project and develop this new Shared Future Housing Development at Woodside Park, Loughbrickland.
"When completed in the autumn of 2011 these 24 houses will provide much needed accommodation for the Loughbrickland area.," he concluded.

Crumlin Social Housing Scheme Opened
A new social housing scheme of three and four bedroom houses has been officially opened in Crumlin. The fourteen new homes for families on the social housing waiting list, is owned and managed by Habinteg Housing Association who funded the build, with support from the Department for Social Development.

A new £25m housing scheme has been approved for the old Bass Brewery in west Belfast. Some 166 new homes will be built in what is being billed as one of the largest social housing schemes undertaken in Northern Ireland. It will also create much needed employment - with some 200 on-site jobs boosting the beleaguered construction industry.
