Meehan Denies Sex Slur
A Sinn Fein councillor and former Newtownabbey councillor, Briege Meehan is to be charged with cruelty and sexual offences. Mrs Meehan, who is the widow of Martin Meehan - who was once one of the most senior IRA leaders in Belfast - was interviewed by police about allegations made by her stepdaughter Mary in February 2009. She claims to have been abused by Mrs Meehan more than 30 years ago while her mother denies the allegations.
Paisley Backs United Ireland
A senior unionist and former 'firebrand', the DUP's Ian Paisley Snr, has declared his support for the reunification of the island of Ireland - but under the UK Crown. Dr Paisley, in his first speech since joining the Lords in July, cited a letter in the Irish Independent newspaper in which the writer "invited Her Majesty to come over and take the whole of Ireland under her control". The newly-ennobled Lord Bannside went on: "I am not going to throw such a bomb as that into the House today. But it's a very good thought and, if we all came together with Her Majesty at our head, I think we would do very well."
Early Years 'Not Acceptable'
The SDLP Education Spokesperson Dominic Bradley has said that the Department of Education's 0-6 Early Years Strategy has some way to go before it is acceptable to the majority of stakeholders. The Newry and Armagh MLA said: "The significant theme coming out of the conference is that none of the major stakeholders are happy with the Early Years Strategy. This is an important educational initiative that has the potential power to influence positively the future of our children," he said, noting that it is important that "we get the 0-6 Early Years Strategy right now and that we prioritise investment in this important aspect of our children's education".
On Your Bike, Says Council
A new initiative to get children and young people in Belfast on bikes was launched at Belfast City Hall by the Chief Medical Officer for Northern Ireland, Dr Michael McBride this week. He was joined by the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Pat Convery, key decision-makers in education, public health and road safety to hear about the difference the Bike Club can make to young people's lives. "Obesity is one of the most important public health issues facing Northern Ireland today with estimates of the annual related costs to the Health and Social Care Service at around £500 million," said Dr McBride. "Our children and young people are becoming increasingly sedentary, therefore initiatives such as Bike Club can help provide opportunities to participate in quality physical activity which can have a real benefit to the health of the entire population." Bike Club is working with Belfast City Council to help thousands of children and young people aged 10 to 20 to learn new life skills through cycling.
Gildernew Welcomes CAP Proposals
NI Agriculture Minister Michelle Gildernew has welcomed this week's publication of the EU Commission Communication on 'The CAP Towards 2010'. "We can at last start to get some sense of the Commission's thinking on the future of Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) support. That said, the document is pitched at quite a high level. I would hope that the Commission moves on quickly to flesh out some of the broad ideas that are presented," she said, turning to the detail of the proposals, the Minister said: "I certainly welcome the dismissal of a single flat rate direct payment across all Member States and its desire to achieve an equitable distribution of the direct support budget. I hope this ambition extends to the distribution of Pillar II monies. This would help address the very low level of funding which has affected current and the previous rural development programmes." The Minister concluded: "We now need to take some time to consider carefully the full text of this Communication. At this very early stage, it is probably fair to say that there are more questions than answers and there are numerous issues that need to be teased out. "Over the coming weeks, I will be launching a consultation to gather stakeholder views on the Communication, the result of which will help inform my response to the Commission. I will be seeking further meetings and contact with the Commission in the weeks and months ahead," she said.
Foster Checks Out Sainsbury's
The NI Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster has highlighted the importance of the retail multiple supply chain to the NI food sector. The Minister was speaking as she met Sainsbury's Retail and Logistics Director Roger Burnley in Belfast. She was told that it currently sources in the region of £250m of food products from suppliers annually. At the meeting, the company announced details of a contract with its latest local supplier, Dungannon-based Mackle Foods, which will see its range of pet treats sold in 600 of Sainsbury's UK stores. "The growth of the multiples has been a significant factor in the success of the food sector and Northern Ireland has benefited from the growing focus on regional sourcing, as well as the associated employment," she said.
