Other NI News In Brief
LOL Invades BBC
BBC NI is to broadcast a new series of Wednesday night comedy, entitled LOL - the text-speak for Laugh Out Loud. Going out at the core slot of 10.45pm - after the late news - the comedy will provide some lighter content, "changing the mood across the week as viewers move towards the weekends", according to the BBC. The comedy programmes will be a half-hour long with occasional bursts of an hour of anarchic comedy - and all to showcase up-and-coming talent. Alisa Orr, Head of Programming, said earlier this year that both LOL and its comedy partner, Sketchy - which has just finished a short run in the same slot - and veteran presenter William Caulfield's 'Our William' are aimed at appeal to the comedy sensibilities of BBC NI's "core audience". The budget for the comic capers is a modest £55,000 for the half hour programming and around £130,000 for the full hour offering.
MLA Welcomes IFI Boost
Robin Newton, the East Belfast DUP MLA, has welcomed a £900,000 funding package offered by International Fund for Ireland (IFI) to develop the old Templemore Avenue School. "This scheme to bring the former Templemore Avenue Primary school back into use as a community networking centre will greatly enhance the area. It will when operational provide educational, training and social opportunities for future users. In addition bringing this near derelict building back into use will brighten up the area and remove the blight the building currently causes," he said.
Front Line Morale Boosted
NI soldiers serving in Afghanistan are to get a New Year boost with help from ex-servicemen at home. Supporters in Whiteabbey Royal British Legion are running a weekend charity fundraiser to get as much cash together as possible to fill bags of 'extras' that will go to front line troops serving in the Royal Irish Regiment and Irish Guards in Afghanistan. Cabaret singers and a band are to perform free of charge on Friday night (26th November) so that all the ticket money can be used for the good cause. John Dumigan, Whiteabbey Royal British Legion's Vice Chairman - himself a former UDR soldier - who is organising the function, said: "We intend to work closely with the relatives of our soldiers in order to directly target the ordinary troops and "give our boys a New Year fillip and a 'fill-up' too". Entry to Friday evening's event at Whiteabbey Royal British Legion, Shore Road, Whiteabbey, will be £3 and all proceeds will be used to buy the treats and extra comforts for the serving soldiers.
NI Targets BBC Food Show
Eleven Northern Ireland food and drink companies will be selling their products to consumers and other visitors at the BBC Good Food Show in Birmingham this week. Eight of the companies are part of an Invest Northern Ireland exhibition stand at the event which is open to the public and regularly attracts thousands of visitors including buyers from major retail chains and independent stores in Great Britain. Several of the companies on the Invest NI stand will be using the event as a platform to launch new products at the event, which runs from 24-28 November at Birmingham's National Exhibition Centre.
