Cleaning Up Clarkson

A young local entrepreneur has been awarded a 'wheely' exciting new contract, securing the racy title of Official Valeting Team for Top Gear Festival Dublin 2010. Total Perfection mobile valeting and detailing company, based near Ballymena and owned by local man Mark Smiley, (pictured with presenter, James May) has been contracted to clean, wax and polish over 100 vehicles at the three-day Top Gear Festival. This is the second year in a row that the company has won the contract to be sole valeter at the Dublin show. "Top Gear is such a well-loved TV programme with a huge cult following and to win this contract for a second year has certainly put Total Perfection in pole position as the No.1 valeting and detailing service in Ireland," said Mark who has 'accelerated' his mobile valeting business in a very short time, earning a squeaky clean reputation for Total Perfection. "Every single one of our customers gets the Top Gear treatment…but, if we're good enough for the discerning Jeremy Clarkson, that's high recommendation," he enthused.

Mum And Baby In Blaze Alert

An incident caused by a free-standing gas heater has led to an eight-week-old baby and a 24-year-old woman being taken to hospital following a fire at a house in the Lisburn Road area of Belfast yesterday. They are being treated for the effects of breathing in smoke after the blaze in Melrose Street, which happened shortly before 1pm on Monday.

Assembly Friction

A Stormont DUP Assembly motion commemorating the death of unionist icon, Lord Craigavon has been branded "daft and pointless" by Sinn Fein, despite unionist MLAs paying tribute to Northern Ireland's first Prime Minister on the 70th anniversary of his death. Sinn Fein instead accused the DUP of again wasting Assembly time in debating the issue having previously criticised them for bringing a grass cutting motion to the Chamber.

Stylistics On Stage

One of the most accomplished soul bands ever to grace the R&B scene is to take to the stage in Belfast this Wednesday. With top hit singles such as You're a Big Girl Now and their Grammy-nominated hit, You Make Me Feel Brand New as some examples of the 12 consecutive top-ten hits they recorded from 1971 to 1974, The Stylistics' charisma, harmony, style and sweet ballads turned them into one of the best-selling soul groups of all time, with Belfast Waterfront audiences set for a rare treat at 8pm tomorrow night.

Troubles 'Comic Capers'

One of Northern Ireland's most outspoken comics, Jake O'Kane has poured all of his jokes, insights and feelings about growing up in The Troubles into a DVD of his live show, Tear Gas. Combining photographs of legendary Belfast photographer Brendan Murphy with computer graphics, Jake tells the story of his upbringing on the streets, where rioting with police, army and the 'other side' was a recreational sport. This DVD was filmed live at 'The Empire Laughs Back' comedy club in Belfast. "I've been doing routines about the Troubles for the past 16 years and I thought it was time to decommission this material; after all, the paramilitaries have supposedly decommissioned their weapons," he said. "Ulster people are known for their dark sense of humour and I hope this DVD captures what it was like growing up during such a surreal time. As a young boy - the routine searches, the presence of army on the streets, the sound of helicopters overhead - were just part of everyday life," he commented. The DVD will be available online at amazon.com soon, or for more information, see: www.jakeokane.com

Planning Waste

NI Environment Minister Edwin Poots has announced his intention to review planning policy for waste management. "The existing policy is out of date. We need to take account of recent changes to European legislation such as the new revised Waste Framework Directive. I am also honouring a commitment given in the 2006 Waste Management Strategy to work towards revising this policy before 2011," he said, noting that he remains keen to seek the views of the public regarding the existing policy to assist in the identification of issues that may need to be addressed in the review. "I am therefore inviting comments to be submitted to the Department of the Environment by the end of December," he said.
