Arrests After Car Crash

Three men involved in a car crash in Craigavon, Co Armagh have been arrested on suspicion of armed robbery. The PSNI said yesterday that a man took money from a service station till at Bolton Road in Loughgilly and escaped in a dark coloured Toyota Carina car. A short time later a similar car crashed in the nearby Pinebank area and the three men in the car - which had been reported stolen in Dundalk - were arrested on suspicion of armed robbery, handling stolen goods, possessing an offensive weapon and motoring offences.

Army Victim 'Innocent'

An Army officer who apologised for killing a Belfast man almost 40 years ago wasn't the soldier to have fired the fatal shot. A report by the Historical Enquiries Team (HET) said that Michael McLarnon, 22, who was shot dead at Etna Drive in the Ardoyne area was innocent and also that despite Lieutenant Clifford Burrage later telling the family he shot Mr McLarnon - as he thought he was armed and organising IRA gunmen - that he wasn't responsible. The HET had found a different army patrol fired the shots and also proved that Michael was an innocent man. Four years after the killing the officer admitting to the shooting and then appeared with Mrs Kelly on the BBC's Facing the Truth programme in 2006. But the report found that another group of soldiers had fired two live rounds and plastic bullets at a crowd that had gathered in the area and one of the bullets struck her brother as he stood at the gate of his house.

'Self-Grit', Says MLA

Robin Newton, the East Belfast DUP MLA has said the severe frost conditions are making life difficult for many who need to get around on foot. This is especially true of the elderly and children, but has offered a solution: "It is impossible for Department for Regional Development Minister Murphy to salt and grit our total roads network, but more could be done at minimal cost by the provision of additional grit boxes. Many neighbours are prepared to make the effort to spread the grit across roads and footpaths. This would help clear the hard packed snow off the side streets and avoid the many injuries now being caused," he said. "I'm calling for the Minister to consider this low cost value for money initiative to help keep the entire community safe over this extremely difficult winter."

Art Students Go Festive

The University of Ulster's Fine and Applied Art students will host their annual Christmas sale at the Belfast campus next week. Taking place on Thursday 9 December from 5pm until 7pm, the event presents an opportunity for students, staff and the public to purchase original pieces of work from up-and-coming young artists. Cultural Development Officer at Ulster's Belfast campus said: "This year's Christmas event promises to be even bigger and better than before with work from a broader range of students on display." To enhance the festive spirit there will also be carols presented by the Chaplaincy Choir, mulled wine refreshments and a Yuletide Raffle including work by Ulster staff.

Staffing Agencies Aided

Employment Minister, Danny Kennedy, has brought in new regulations to reduce the regulatory and administrative burden on employment agencies. "This legislation should benefit employment agencies in Northern Ireland by reducing some of the regulatory burdens on them," he said. "The need for agencies to carry out unnecessary checks has been removed, and the circumstances in which contractual terms are required have been reduced," he explained, noting that the new regulations will also address the practice of charging up-front fees to those seeking work in the modelling and entertainment sectors.

Graham Wins Scottish Pier Contract

Co Down-based Graham Construction has secured a £3.44 million contract to carry out extensive upgrade works on Kennacraig Pier on the Mull of Kintyre in SCotland. Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL) appointed Graham following a Public Contracts Scotland tendering process and work will begin on-site week commencing 6th December. The contract will predominantly comprise the construction of a berthing dolphin large enough to accommodate the new CMAL vehicle and passenger ferry MV Finlaggan, which will serve the island of Islay and is due in Scotland in April 2011. General upgrade works are also planned, including repairs to the existing sheet piled walls, re-profiling the concrete fixed ramp and upgrading of the fuelling system, the water supply to the pier, the terminal lighting and drainage. The works will be carried out whilst maintaining one berth open at all times, to ensure continuity of the ferry service to Islay, and the project is scheduled to be completed by early summer 2010. The berthing dolphin will be completed for the arrival of MV Finlaggan in April.
