Strategy framework unveiled for Derry city centre
“A Strategy for the City Centre - Derry Londonderry provides a framework for continuing the re- building of the city as a vibrant and outward looking place with a strong regional role and a distinctive international identity,” said John Hunter, Permanent Secretary, Department for Social Development.
Speaking at the launch of the strategy in the Verbal Arts Centre, Londonderry on Wednesday, November 7, Mr Hunter said that the strategy reflected the corporate views of government departments, agencies and the various other interest parties that were working in partnership to improve the city centre.
The Permanent Secretary said: “This document seeks to integrate and co-ordinate planning for the city centre. It demonstrates the ability, desire and commitment of all the departments, agencies and sectors to build a better city. A city which provides a welcoming environment for people to live in, visit, do business and create prosperity, opportunity and civic pride for all its citizens.
“Since the launch of the first City Centre Strategy, in 1999, there have been many changes in the city centre. This document will provide a framework for regeneration today and in the future.”
Mr Hunter praised City Centre Initiative and his Departmental officials, through the Londonderry Development Office, who have made available just over £178,000 over the last five years, for their commitment to the Strategy.
At the launch the Lady Mayor, Alderman Mildred Garfield, said: “I am pleased that Derry City Council with the Department for Social Development and other agencies have been able to draw up this strategy for the improvement of the city centre. It will indeed be of great benefit to all those involved in the city centre and its design.”
The document “A Strategy for the City Centre - Derry Londonderry,” an update of the City Centre Strategy first published in 1999, draws together the plans and aspirations of public agencies, including the Londonderry Development Office, Derry City Council and business interests.
