Belfast set to benefit from PFI development
Belfast will soon see the completion of work on the award-winning Laganside Courts Complex, one of the first developments of its sort to be built under the Private Finance Initiative (PFI).
Construction of the Laganside Courts Complex began in January 1999 and is set to finish by the end of the year.
The building is scheduled to open its doors in April 2002, and will comprise county and magistrates courts, plus assorted office accommodation and custody facilities. The Complex has already taken the top prize in the Accommodation category in the PFI Awards for 2000, and could be about to repeat such an achievement in this year’s event.
The Private Finance Initiative is one of the main mechanisms through which the public sector can improve value for money in partnership with the private sector.
Launched in 1992 with the aim of delivering higher quality and more cost-effective public services by attempting to encourage partnerships and by involving the private sector more directly in asset provision and operation. (CL)
