Welders Win Cross Border Business Boost
A Co Londonderry firm - Steam and Generation Services (SGS) in Maydown - has won its first export business.
SGS, based at Carrakeel Industrial Park in Derry, secured a significant contract to provide coded (insurance accredited) welding and other mechanical and engineering services at the Tynagh Energy power station in Galway.
The export business was achieved within a year of the formation of the company, a £260,000 investment with assistance of £35,000 from Invest NI, which has also assisted the company to develop its management systems.
SGS also recently received key industry accreditations – ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems); ISO 9001 (Quality Management); and ISO 18001 (Health and Safety).
The company's success was announced by Sean Hegarty, SGS Sales and Marketing Director, and welcomed by Des Gartland, Invest NI's North West Regional Office Manager, during a visit to the company, which was set up last February and currently employs eight people.
Mr Hegarty said: "Winning this first business in the Republic of Ireland is immensely encouraging since SGS was established to develop opportunities throughout the island of Ireland in line with the development of an all-island power generation market.
"We secured the business because of our management team's knowledge, experience and contacts in the power industry. It positions us for further growth in both Northern Ireland and the Republic.
"Achieving the three accreditations is also extremely important because all our target customers expect excellent services that meet their time critical requirements that minimise downtime in boiler operations," he said also welcoming the support received from Invest NI towards starting and developing the business has been terrific.
"It has enabled us to achieve our key objective of winning significant business in the Republic, a market that we expect to provide around a third of our business this year."
Invest NI's Des Gartland said: "SGS is demonstrating a strong commitment to business outside Northern Ireland and an impressive entrepreneurial drive. The team has an impressive track record and a wealth of experience in this important and highly competitive industry.
"Our support was shaped to encourage and assist the business to move into exporting as quickly as practical because we recognised the potential of the energy market in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and also because of the quality of the employment opportunities that the business would be likely to provide.
"The company is ahead of its employment targets and at peak contract times, it has actually exceeded employment projections. Our hope is that the success in the Republic will encourage SGS, in time, to explore opportunities in the much larger Great Britain marketplace."
