Environmentally friendly first for Enniskillen Motel

The Belmore Court Motel in Enniskillen has become Northern Ireland’s first ‘Eco Motel’ by switching to Northern Ireland Electricity’s environmentally friendly electricity, Eco Energy.

While most electricity is made from fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas, which may have a damaging effect on the environment by contributing to climate change, NIE offers customers the choice to opt for Eco Energy. This alternative source of ‘green electricity’ is supplied from non-polluting and renewable energy sources such as wind power.

Motel owner, Terry McCartney, said: "By signing up the motel to Eco Energy, we could make the very best energy choice for the environment. It's a first step in the right direction to minimise the impact of our activities on the environment.

"Choosing green energy also makes good financial sense, as the electricity produced from renewable sources is exempt from the recently introduced Climate Change Levy.

"As a pioneering motel in Northern Ireland, we hope that our lead in switching on to green electricity will encourage others within the industry to 'do their bit' for the environment".

Congratulating the Belmore Court Motel on their pioneering green credentials, Andy McCrea, NIE's Environmental Services Manager said: "It is crucial for businesses across all sectors to look at how their activities affect the environment. The amount of energy used and where it comes from obviously has a major impact. The Belmore Court Motel is leading the hospitality sector in sustainability in Northern Ireland.”

NIE point out that householders too can register their home for Eco Energy. However, signing up for 10 per cent Eco Energy will cost the typical environmentally friendly householder about 4.5p per week extra. (SP)
