PSNI Probe Eagle Poisoning

The PSNI are appealing for information about an incident of suspected wildlife crime. A spokesman said that on 1st November last year, police received a report that a dead Golden Eagle and a dead Raven had been found in a rural area at Ballymongan Road, Killeter, outside Castlederg in Co Tyrone. Further examination suggests that the birds died as a result of poisoning using the poison 'carbofuren'. The police have appealed for help on the incidents and said anyone with information should contact police by calling 0845 600 8000, alternatively this can be passed anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.

East Belfast Security Alert Ends

The Army bomb squad has removed a suspicious device at the centre of a security alert in east Belfast. The object was reported outside a house on London Road, near the Ravenhill Road, at around 7am. Local Alliance Councillor Máire Hendron has expressed disgust at those involved and has attended the scene on Friday morning to help people evacuated from their homes. "This alert caused seriously disruption to people living in the surrounding area. People were evacuated from their homes and a number of families with young children have been out of their houses since 7.30am in the morning," she said. Meanwhile, Royal Mail has said a firework caused a small explosion and prompted a security alert at the UK's National Returns Centre (used for all undelivered post) at the Tomb Street sorting office near Belfast city centre. The minor explosion happened as an employee was opening a package containing the firework. The employee was not injured, but Army Technical Officers and the Fire and Rescue Service were dispatched to the scene in the Tomb Street area and the building was evacuated for about half an hour.

East Belfast Drugs' Haul Welcomed

Sinn Fein representative for Pottinger, Niall Ó Donnghaile has welcomed the seizure of more than £200,000 worth of cannabis in the London Road area of east Belfast. "Obviously any move to take illegal drugs off our streets is to be welcomed. For some time now we have been raising the concerns of residents across the Pottinger area directly with the PSNI about apparent increases in drug dealing in the constituency. As a community we must all ensure we stand against those who would peddle drugs within our areas," he said.

Stay Alert Behind Wheel

Lapses in drivers' concentration ruin lives, Environment Minister Edwin Poots warned as he launched a new hard-hitting road safety campaign, entitled 'Moment', which focuses on how the simplest lapse can have devastating consequences. From 2000–2009, careless driving has been responsible for 452 deaths and 6,117 serious injuries. Put simply, this means careless drivers were responsible for 46% of fatalities and serious injuries on our roads, he explained, noting: "Almost all our road safety problems are caused by poor driving behaviour and, as responsible citizens, we must all think about what we can do to improve our attitudes and driving standards. Driver carelessness is not one but many specific behaviours which lead to death or serious injury. And these behaviours combined mean that driver carelessness is the biggest cause of death and serious injury on NI's roads."
