Obel Abseilers Sought

Gail Boyce, Director of Karl Group of Companies, the developer of The Obel building on Belfast's waterfront and local TV personality Pamela Ballantine will take a leap of faith and abseil Ireland's tallest building to support Save the Children and the Ulster Cancer Foundation. Irish Sea Searched

An extensive search is underway after a passenger failed to disembark from the Larne to Cairnryan ferry when it docked in Scotland. The person is currently 'missing' while Clyde Coastguard in Scotland follows up reports that one person is unaccounted for from a P&O European Highlander ferry. It is believed around 30 rescue personnel are involved in the major search operation. The ferry is being searched and a Royal Navy rescue helicopter and lifeboats from Larne, Portpatrick and Stranraer are searching with Larne RNLI concentrating on Lough Ryan.

Mail Cleared

A suspicious parcel, which sparked a security alert at Royal Mail's Tomb Street facility in Belfast city centre, has proved to be a false alarm after Army bomb experts were called to the sorting office on Thursday evening, but nothing untoward was found. The incident came after a small explosion caused by a firework prompted an alert in the same building last week.

Suicide Summit

Health Minister, Michael McGimpsey has chaired a meeting of the Ministerial Co-ordination Group on Suicide Prevention. At the meeting, the Ministers discussed progress on the implementation of the Protect Life suicide prevention strategy and looked at a range of issues aimed at helping to reduce the number of suicides across Northern Ireland. Ministers also provided an update on the work ongoing in their Departments and agencies. "Our local suicide rate remains high and we need to think innovatively about what more we can do across Government to tackle this problem. The meeting provided us with the opportunity to consider what further contributions we all can make on this most important issue," said Minister McGimpsey.

Less Festive Drink-Drivers

The Stormont Environment Minister Edwin Poots has welcomed figures, which showed a reduction in drink drive detections over the Christmas period. However, Mr Poots expressed his disbelief that some people still choose to drink and drive. The PSNI revealed there were 364 detections out of 4,357 roadside tests over the festive period. Although detections were down by a total of 50, 25%, less breath tests were carried out on the run up to Christmas due to the reduced level of traffic in the severe weather conditions. Minister Poots continued: "I never fail to be shocked and disappointed that there are still those who continue to disregard the law and ignore their responsibilities to other road users."

Ponzi Scheme Halted

Irish speculators have been conned out of millions of pounds after investing in a Ponzi scheme. The fraudulent operation pays returns to investors from their own money or money paid by subsequent investors. Now, the authorities in the UK have frozen £6m in assets and have also been granted a restraining order preventing the man behind the scam from continuing to operate.

PSNI Targets Bad Manners

Members of the Northern Ireland Policing Board's Human Rights and Professional Standards Committee have welcomed a reduction in complaints of police 'bad manners'. During 2010, the Committee raised concerns about the consistent level of complaints of incivility over a five-year period and as a result, the PSNI introduced a Complaints Reduction Strategy at the end of last year which has already shown a decrease of 19% in the number of cases recorded. Committee Chair, Basil McCrea MLA, said: "Ensuring the delivery of professional standards remains an area of focus for the next year, the Committee is working to further develop its effective oversight and scrutiny of this area."

CF Unit 'Retained'

A dedicated unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast for young people with cystic fibrosis has been 'welcomed back' from oblivion. Cherry Tree House was built 25 years ago from private funds, but in December, it emerged Belfast Health Trust planned to take away the unit's dedicated beds to accommodate parents of all types of sick children. However, the Trust has now agreed to keep two in-patient rooms on a priority basis for teens with cystic fibrosis.

Paisley Remembers Holocaust

A DUP MP has underlined the 'Untold Stories' of the Holocaust by signing Book of Commitment. On Thursday, Ian Paisley pledged his commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day by signing a Book of Commitment in the House of Commons to honour those who perished in the Holocaust. In doing so, Ian Paisley paid tribute to those individuals who survived the appalling events of the Holocaust and have since dedicated their lives to educating younger generations about the dangers of allowing persecution and intolerance to take hold in society.

Social Housing For Dungannon

March this year has been pencilled in as a start date for a £3m social housing development in Co Tyrone. Detailed plans were formally submitted to Dungannon Council by Apex Housing Association in the early part of January for the construction of a housing development at Granville Road, Dungannon. It will comprise the construction of four pairs of two-storey semi-detached dwelling houses and one single-storey supported housing unit for up to 24 residents with learning disabilities and their associated support staff. Main construction work is expected to commence in March, 2011 with the estimated cost in the region of £3.1m.

Crumlin Social Housing Scheme Opened
A new social housing scheme of three and four bedroom houses has been officially opened in Crumlin. The fourteen new homes for families on the social housing waiting list, is owned and managed by Habinteg Housing Association who funded the build, with support from the Department for Social Development.

Major New Housing Development Scheme In Strabane
Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey has announced that her department has awarded an £11.7 million Housing Association Grant towards a new £22 million social housing scheme in Strabane. The development will provide 150 social homes as well as retail opportunities within the site and a children's playpark.
