Attwood 'Markets' New Housing Project
Northern Ireland's Social Development Minister, Alex Attwood has officially launched the start of building work at a £2m housing scheme in the nationalist Markets area of south Belfast.
The development of 16 two bedroom apartments at Stewart Street, on the site of the former NI Housing Executive district heating plant, is being funded by the Department for Social Development and Clanmil Housing.
The accommodation has been designed to a high energy efficient specification and will include landscaped gardens and secure on site car parking for residents.
Minister Attwood said: "This is a boost for an area which needs more housing. It will be an iconic building, built to the very highest specification. This latest development represents my Department's commitment to the on going regeneration and revitalisation of this much deprived part of the city.
"The delivery of high numbers of sustainable housing is one of my key priorities. This year will see the greatest number of houses started for more than a decade. I have seen for myself the difference that good housing can bring to people's lives and I will continue to do my utmost to deliver what is required for our most vulnerable citizens."
Clare McCarty, Chief Executive of Clanmil Housing commented: "Clanmil is committed to providing high quality, affordable homes for rent in areas of high housing need and we are delighted to see work start on the construction of these much needed apartments. "We have worked closely with local community and political representatives to get the scheme to this stage and very much appreciate their help and support.
"We look forward to continuing to work with them in the delivery and management of this scheme," she said.
Construction by Glasgiven/Geda Construction has just commenced, with completion planned for May 2012.

Crumlin Social Housing Scheme Opened
A new social housing scheme of three and four bedroom houses has been officially opened in Crumlin. The fourteen new homes for families on the social housing waiting list, is owned and managed by Habinteg Housing Association who funded the build, with support from the Department for Social Development.

Brewery To Become New Homes
A new £25m housing scheme has been approved for the old Bass Brewery in west Belfast. Some 166 new homes will be built in what is being billed as one of the largest social housing schemes undertaken in Northern Ireland. It will also create much needed employment - with some 200 on-site jobs boosting the beleaguered construction industry.

Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie MLA has officially handed over keys to the first residents of a £7.3million housing development on Belfast’s Antrim Road today. Built on the site of the former Milk Marketing Board headquarters, the project was led by Oaklee Housing Association and funded by the Department for Social Development.
