Lagan Valley Midwifery Unit Welcomed
A new midwifery led unit has opened its doors at Lagan Valley hospital in Co Antrim.
The unit - in Lisburn - has been modelled on Dundonald's Ulster Hospital Maternity has three out of the four rooms with their own birthing pool and en-suite facilities
NI Health Minister Michael McGimpsey said: "The opening of this newly refurbished midwifery led unit is good news for local women.
"This will be the second freestanding midwife led unit to open in Northern Ireland," he added.
"The Downe Hospital midwifery unit has already been very successful and many women are actively choosing to have their babies in midwife led units.
"I expect the Lagan Valley unit will be just as popular with mothers-to-be as it will provide high quality care and offer real choice.
"The transfer from a consultant led inpatient service to the midwifery led service has been planned for some time.
"It is estimated that a large number of the 1,200 women each year who gave birth at Lagan Valley obstetric led unit, which only booked women with low to medium risk pregnancies, will be suitable to deliver in the new unit," he said.
The establishment of a midwifery led unit at Lagan Valley Hospital was announced on 18 March 2009.
Alliance Lisburn South representative Stephen Martin hailed the opening of the new Midwife Led Unit at Lagan Valley Hospital ensuring the continuation of maternity services in the city.
Stephen Martin said: "It was clear that local people did not want to see the removal of local maternity services by the Minister and as a result of the long running campaign, I am delighted that we have seen the opening of the new facilities.
"The campaign to retain maternity services shows what can be done in this era of austerity if people work together to achieve a result which at one stage looked lost.
"Congratulations must go to all involved especially the staff whose professionalism and service in the transition period to the new unit continued to be of the highest standard," he said.

Co Antrim mums-to-be are to enjoy a boost with news that the new Midwifery led unit at Lisburn City's Lagan Valley Hospital will open early next year. After the 2nd of February, there will be a four-bedded facility with each of the four single rooms having its own en suite facilities and there will also be a birthing pool.

Farrans-Built Hospital Project Opened
The building contractor responsible for a major new hospital facility in Co Armagh has been celebrating. Farrans Healthcare and the architect for the huge project, Milligan Reside Larkin, in Newry - in association with P O'Hagan Architects - have this week marked the end of their work with the official opening of the new £9.
