Bombardier unveil Global 5000 business jet
Bombardier have unveiled their latest intercontinental business jet, the Bombardier Global 5000, with which they will aim to set new standards in the super-large jet niche market.
Bombardier’s twelfth new aircraft in 12 years the new business jet will compete in the super-large jet segment which, according to industry forecasts, will require some 750 aircraft by the year 2010.
Vice-President and General Manager, Bombardier Aerospace, Northern Ireland, Michael Ryan said: “Our participation in the Bombardier Global 5000 demonstrates yet again Bombardier's commitment to a strong integrated design and manufacturing capability here in Northern Ireland.
“As with the Bombardier Global Express, of which the Bombardier Global 5000 is a derivative, our team is responsible for the design and production of the forward fuselage, engine nacelles, the horizontal stabilizer and other major composite structures for the aircraft.”
Mr Ryan said that up to 50 engineers were expected to be involved in the design phase of the project, and when the programme is in full production inside three years around 280 people would be working on it. However, he added that the programme had been “taken into account” when Bombardier announced redundancies in late September.
He added: “We have to go through this difficult period for our company and our employees, but it is important to understand that business does continue. We have to ensure our competitiveness and continue to deliver on commitments to our customers. Investments in new aircraft like the Bombardier Global 5000 are very important for our future.”
Entering corporate service in late 2004, the Bombardier Global 5000 will be able to carry eight passengers plus three crew non-stop from central North America to continental Europe at a speeds of up to 561 mph.
Bombardier Aerospace is now seeking commitments from prospective customers, heading towards a formal launch of the programme within the next few months.
While, the programme is currently in development, the first flight is anticipated in the first quarter of 2003, with certification of the aircraft by early 2004. (SP)
