Assembly member welcomes Unipork takeover
Ulster Unionist Assembly Member for Mid-Ulster, Billy Armstrong, has welcomed plans for the purchase of Unipork by Grampian Country Foods Group.
Mr Armstrong said any fresh ideas and new investment into Northern Ireland, such as that by taken by Grampian Foods in their plan to acquire Unipork, was a welcome step.
He added: “This is an ideal opportunity to improve pork processing facilities in Northern Ireland and to give confidence to the Northern Ireland pig industry.
“The Mid-Ulster UUP representatives will endeavour to ensure that the workforce jobs are secure within the new company. It is crucial that Grampian recognises the dedicated and skilled labour force of Unipork and we must ensure that their positions are secure.
“At this stage I would encourage the Department of Enterprise, Trade & Industry and the IDB to support the pork industry by providing the well deserved financial support that Grampian would require to build a new 21st Century factory for Unipork on a green-field site.”
A member of both the Committee for Agriculture and Rural Development and the Committee for Enterprise, Trade & Investment, Mr Armstrong revealed that the pork industry in Northern Ireland had survived extremely difficult times in recent years.
Highlighting the fire at the Llovell and Christmas factory in Ballymoney in June 1998, he said that pig farmers deserved a state of the art factory to support the local industry. (MB)
