HSENI launch Guide to Health and Safety in Agriculture
The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) have launched the new ‘Guide to Health and Safety in Agriculture’ at the Rural College in Draperstown.
The guide will be the essential health and safety reference for Northern Ireland’s farming industry and replaces the former guide ‘Farm Safety’. It provides up-to-date advice for all farm businesses, including the use of risk assessment as an important tool in the management of health and safety.
Jim Keyes, Chief Executive of HSENI, said: “The new guide has been designed to present practical advice for everyone who works in the farming industry. Agriculture plays a significant role in Northern Ireland’s economy and reducing the human and economic risk within this sector is a key objective for HSENI. The publication of this Guide is an important step forward in raising health and safety awareness within the farming community and will be invaluable in assisting HSENI and farmers manage risk together.”
Over the past five years accidents on Northern Ireland farms have caused 30 deaths and already this year there have been five fatal accidents, three of which involved young children between the ages of three and nine years.
Copies of the new Guide can be obtained from HSENI’s office, from local HSENI inspectors and offices of the Ulster Farmers’ Union. The Guide is also being placed on the HSENI website. (MB)
