Lenihan Appointed As Fianna Fail Deputy
The Republic's opposition party leader, Michael Martin, has controversially announced former Finance Minister Brian Lenihan (pictured) as the new Deputy Leader of their Fianna Fail party.
Mr Martin said he was pleased to confirm the appointment as he unveiled the party's candidates for election to the Seanad Éireann.
During an address which included his appointment of Seán Ó Fearghail as Party Whip, Mr Martin said he was looking forward to announcing further details of his frontbench over the coming weeks.
Despite criticism that Mr Martin was failing to disassociate the party from the unpopularity of the policies under former Taoiseach, Brian Cowen and Mr Lenihan, the new party leader said: "The forthcoming election to Seanad Éireann provides our party with an important opportunity to elect national legislators, committed to public service and to the renewal of national politics and the Fianna Fáil Party."
"Since my election as Leader of Fianna Fáil I have been clear on the need for renewal within the party to ensure we can and will continue to make a positive contribution to Irish life in the future.
Mr Martin said he had met with most of the party's councillors, and discussed the forthcoming Seanad Election with them, saying he had made the case that the upcoming election was an important step in the renewal process.
