Dalriada Festival Celebrates Shared Heritage
Northern Ireland and Scotland's interlinked heritage is set to see a revival at this year's P&O Dalriada Festival in June.
The festival was launched in March in Belfast's Corn Market, boasting performances from Scottish dancers, strongmen, triathletes, hurlers, and live music from Scottish and Irish musicians.
Glenarm salmon, beef and other food samples were also handed out to the public.
Dal Riada was a Gaelic overkingdom on the western coast of Scotland that encompassed roughly what is now Argyll and Bute and Lochaber in Scotland, and also much of County Antrim in the 6th and 7th centuries.
The festival is tailored to appeal to all ages, and a recent revamp will see it unfolding in three main areas: sport, music and food.
The Festival of Music will include special performances local musicians General Fiasco, Duke Special Túcan, who also kicked off the festival launch in Belfast's Corn Market, The Priests, Amici and the Camerata Ireland Orchestra. Grammy award winning David Phelps will also perform.
The Festival of Food will include cookery master classes by TV chef Jenny Bristow and will showcase produce from the walled garden at Glenarm as well as dishes prepared with locally sourced ingredients.
As well as the Highlander Challenge 'World Championships', The Festival of Sport also boasts tag rugby, tug'o'wars, mountain runs, a rowing regatta and Poc-fada.
The theme of this year's P & O Ferries Dalriada Festival is described on their website as "Recycle, Renew and Regenerate, Recycle and share talent, Renew passion and belief in local produce and Regenerate excitement in the land, its people and our shared cultural heritage".
The festival takes place in conjunction with P&O Ferries, the North East Regional Rural Development Programme, UTV, NITB, NEFF and Tennents.
