Residents Evacuated After Discovery Of Suspicious Device

A number of houses have been evacuated in Londonderry following the discovery of a suspicious object on a car windscreen, at Kinnego Park in the Foyle Springs area.

Army bomb experts have been in the area since the incident was reported.

According to police, 18 homes have been evacuated and the area has been cordoned off.

SDLP councillor, Mark H Durkan, said the alert had caused a great deal of angst in the community

He commented: "It's still unclear about the nature of the device, but it has caused some fear and worry among many people in the area. I condemn this without question. To place a device on a car windscreen, where anybody could walk past and harm themselves is reckless in the extreme. Just what it's supposed to achieve is beyond me.

"People have had to be evacuated from their homes and this has caused a great deal of angst within the community. I urge anybody with information to pass it to the police. These incidents cannot continue."
