Police Revisit Sex Assault Scene

Police have revisited the scene of a sex assault on a 76-year-old woman in Newtownards to appeal for information a week after the attack. The pensioner was assaulted at her home just over a week ago. The MP for the area, Jim Shannon of the DUP, said there was a sense of revulsion and disbelief in the community following the attack. He visited the victim and her family on Sunday night and said they had been left traumatised by what had happened. SDLP councillor Joe Boyle said the incident was "horrendous". He commented: "People in Newtownards are in a state of disbelief that something so evil has happened in their community. To attack anyone in this way is contemptible, but to target a vulnerable elderly person and sexually abuse them is totally depraved." Police have said they have increased patrols in the area and neighbourhood officers have been talking with residents. The attacker was described as being in his late 20s, having dark hair and was wearing a dark tracksuit with a red stripe down the legs. Police want anyone with information to contact them at the Rape Crime Unit on 0845 600 8000 or on Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Remembrance Service For Victims Of Cork Plane Crash

The six people who died in last month's plane crash at Cork Airport have been remembered at a special ecumenical service in the city’s North Cathedral. Relatives of those who died, along with some of the six survivors, attended the service. Six people - three from Northern Ireland - died when the Manx2 flight from Belfast crashed while attempting to land at Cork Airport on 10 February. Members of the emergency services, as well as police, hospital and airport staff were also in attendance. Representatives of the Irish President Mary McAleese and Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny were at the service as well as those from the British and Spanish embassies. Lawrence Wilson from Larne, County Antrim, was among those who survived the crash. He commented: "It has brought people from the north close to people from the south," he said. I have made great friends with Donal Walsh (another survivor of the crash) and things have really looked up through all the tragedy.” Irish air accident investigators said they were still trying to establish why the plane crashed.

‘Viable’ Object Found In Belfast

Police have said a suspicious object found in north Belfast was a viable device. Police received a report of a suspicious object in the Shanlieve Park area in the early hours of Saturday morning. Army and police attended and a number of homes were evacuated. Police said the object was examined and declared to be a "viable pipe bomb type device". It has been taken away for further examination. North Belfast DUP MP Nigel Dodds condemned it as "reckless" and urged anyone with information to come forward. He commented: "Every passing person is being put at risk by these callous actions. It is appalling that a pipe bomb was left in this residential area. Those responsible for this reckless act are to be utterly condemned. They have absolutely nothing to offer society and the sooner these dangerous individuals are caught and locked up the better."

Irish Language School Gets Upgrade

New accommodation for Bunscoil Bheanna Boirche in Castlewellan was officially opened by Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane. Funding for the accommodation came from the Department of Education. The new accommodation, Iontaobhas na Gaelscolaíochta (InaG), includes classroom space, a resource area, external play area and parking. The Minister said: “This is an exciting time for the Irish-medium education sector across the north and particularly in the South Down area. Together with the voluntary pre-school provision currently delivered by Naíscoil Uachtar Tíre, it is now possible for children and young people in this area to receive their entire formal education through the medium of Irish. I commend the Principal, staff, governors and parents for their hard work and commitment to providing education in our native language. I wish them every success for the future as they settle into the new premises.”
