UFF leader drops legal battle for freedom

The jailed leader of loyalist paramilitary group, the Ulster Freedom Fighters, Johnny Adair has abandoned a legal case in a bid to be released from Maghaberry jail.

Lawyers acting for Mr Adair had been due to apply for a judicial review at Belfast High Court as part of a legal challenge to have him released from prison. Mr Adair, who had been released from prison in September 1999 under the early release provisions in the Good Friday Agreement, had been returned to jail in August last year. The then Secretary of State, Peter Mandelson, revoked Mr Adair’s licence on the grounds of evidence that Mr Adair as a leading loyalist had been involved in increasing tensions during a loyalist feud.

Lawyers for Mr Adair were understood to be seeking a judicial review on the basis that his human rights had been infringed when the Sentence Review body upheld the government’s decision to revoke Mr Adair’s licence.

However, on Monday the High Court was informed that lawyers would not be proceeding with the case. With remission Mr Adair is thought likely to be released next year. (SP)
