Belgian airline scraps most of Belfast flights
Struggling Belgian airline Sabena has announced that it is to scrap two of its three daily Belfast-Brussels flights.
The troubled airline carrier had been due to cease all flights on the Belfast route at the end of this month.
However, its financial crisis, compounded by part owner Swissair’s demise, persuaded the airline to drop two of the three flights ahead of time. Sabena also announced it was also ending some other flights early - including Brussels’ services to Tokyo, Beirut and Verona in Italy.
Meanwhile, Sabena was trying to sort out a financial package that will keep it in business. A court granted the airline bankruptcy protection on condition that the Belgian government gave Sabena £77 million to restructure the company along low cost airline tracks.
This move however, is being investigated by the European Commission who have demanded to know details of the aid package in view of the fact that the subsidy might be violating EU competition rules.
Sabena is part owned by Swissair which holds a 49.5 per cent stake and the Belgian government which holds the remaining 50.5 per cent. (AMcE)

On Friday evening, November 22nd, a vehicle was intercepted and searched in the West Bank Road area of north Belfast.

Minister Reacts To Teachers' Union Ballot Threat
Education Minister Paul Givan has responded to the announcement by several teachers' unions that they plan to ballot their members for industrial action over 2024/25 pay. Earlier this year, the Minister provided funding to successfully resolve the long-running industrial dispute over teachers' pay for 2021-24.

Crash-Hit Airline Grounds Cork Flights
Manx2 has ended its service between Belfast and Cork just over a fortnight after one of its flights crashed, killing six people. The company said it had carried out a review following the February 10 tragedy and would only continue to operate the route for the another two weeks.
