Kerr Family Urge Votes

The family of a murdered PSNI constable has appealed for people here to "continue their support of the Good Friday Agreement/peace process" by voting in large numbers. Dissident republicans murdered Constable Kerr, 25, last month in an under-car bomb attack outside his home in Omagh. The family statement said: "This is our only democratic means to reaffirm our need for peace," as the statement warned that voter apathy will give influence to the "men of violence" and said "we need politicians and police representing all sections of the community".

Voter Apathy Feared

Ulster Unionist Leader Tom Elliott has called on all unionists to "come out and vote on Thursday". Mr Elliott said that, in spite of fears of apathy among the electorate, it was hugely important that Unionists exercised their democratic entitlement and gave their support to a positive Ulster Unionist message via the ballot box. "We want to see an Executive that works collectively for the benefit of all the people of Northern Ireland, rather than have Ministers operating in silos pursuing their own narrow ideological agendas. We stand on a platform that offers a real alternative to that of the Sinn Fein/DUP alliance. We want a Programme for Government being agreed prior to the formation of a new Executive, with this Programme reflecting a commonly agreed agenda about what is good for Northern Ireland and the people of Northern Ireland," he said, shortly before taking part in the last 'Leaders' debate before the poll on a BBC TV forum last night.

Derry SDLP Assault

An SDLP council candidate has said he has been left "badly shaken" after a man attacked him while canvassing in Londonderry. James Carr was canvassing in the Galliagh area when a man verbally abused and tried to assault him on Tuesday night. Mr Carr said the man tried to hit him with a golf club in front of his father and four-year-old niece. He described the incident as "terrifying."

Derry Hotel Planned

A panning application has been submitted for a hotel on the site of the former Tillie and Henderson shirt factory in Londonderry. Diljit Rana's Andras House property firm plans a mixed-use development on the site that will incorporate a 139-bed hotel, two shops and 15 apartments.
