Prison Deaths Probed

Following this week's deaths of two prisoners at Belfast's Hydebank Young Offenders Centre, the tragedies are to be the subject of three separate investigations. The PSNI, coroner and prisoner ombudsman will investigate the deaths. The prison service said a ligature had been removed from each prisoner's cell but the two prisoners did not appear to have known each other and the deaths were not linked. Samuel Carson, 19, died shortly after 5pm on Wednesday despite efforts by prison staff to revive him in his cell at the prison's Elm 1 wing and Frances McKeown, 23, was found in her cell a few hours later in Ash 4 wing.

Critical Injuries In Crash

Two people have been injured - one of whom is critical - after a serious road accident between a car and an articulated lorry in Co Tyrone. It happened on the Killyclogher Road which is the main route between Omagh and Cookstown. The road was closed and diversions in place on Friday afternoon and motorists were advised to take an alternative route.

Crash Victim Badly Hurt

A road in Co Antrim has been closed after a woman was left with life-threatening injuries in hospital following a crash at Ballygally. Two vehicles collided in the Weyburn Road area on Friday, shortly before 8.45am. A man was also taken to hospital but his condition is not yet known. The Weyburn Road is closed at both ends. Police are advising motorists to take an alternative route.

Haulage Bosses Jailed Over Tachos

The bosses of an NI haulage firm Boyle Transport have been jailed after an investigation uncovered evidence that some of their drivers had been working up to 22 hours a day. Patrick James Boyle, 65, and his son Mark Anthony Boyle, 36, of Boyle Transport in Newry, pleaded guilty to conspiring with drivers to tamper with tachograph records. At Carlisle Crown Court in Cumbria, the Managing Director, Patrick Boyle, 65, from Newry, was handed a two-year prison sentence and his son and fellow director Mark Boyle, 36, was given an 18-month prison sentence after he also pleaded guilty to the conspiracy. A total of 15 drivers received suspended sentences and orders to carry out unpaid work, after they pleaded guilty to making false tacho records. Patrick and Mark Boyle were also disqualified from acting as company directors for five years.

Richill Enriched

High level talks have been held over the creation of a one-stop 'health park' in the heart of Richhill, Co Armagh. It is understood that talks have taken place between Armagh Council, the Southern Health and Social Care Trust and other interest parties about what would be an exciting development for the village, if it came to fruition. Although such a complex project would require the formal commitment of several stakeholders and negotiations are at an early stage, it appears that the key players are agreed on the desirability and potential of the concept. Ideally, Richhill would have the doctor's surgery, dental and pharmacy services on the same site, stretching from the front of the current health centre across to the New Line.

Benidorm Jets Ahead

The rise in popularity of ITV's Benidorm series has coincided with an increase in flight searches to the Spanish destination suggesting it could be ready for a renaissance in these times of austerity. Airline Jet2.com have therefore made some of their 2012 flights to Alicante - the airport that serves Benidorm - available already as fight searches for Benidorm are on the rise, they said, noting that when the show is aired (now on on ITV2 at 9pm on Fridays) search results for flights to the Spanish resort increase by 159% - including hits from Belfast passengers.
