Firms 'To Watch' Sought
Launching InterTradeIreland's All Island Seedcorn Business Competition are Conal Loughrey of Belfast-based company Sophia Search, Liam Nellis, Chief Executive of InterTradeIreland (centre) and Stephen Houston from Sofia Search, winner of the Best High Growth Company title in the 2009 competition. The competition mirrors the real-life investment process where companies submit their business plan which is assessed and if shortlisted, are invited to deliver an investment pitch in front of the judging panel comprising venture capitalists, business angels and some of the island's leading industry experts. The judges are looking for the same elements as a potential investor including high growth projections. The winners of Best High Growth Company and Best Emerging Company titles stand to win €100,000 and €50,000 respectively and there are also regional prizes of €20,000 and one Best Spinout prize of €10,000. 'Kidnap Plot' Trio Charged
Three Liverpool men were alleged in court this week to have targeted one of NI's richest men, businessman Michael Herbert. Craig Murray, 30, of Victoria Road, Crosby; Richard Blundell, 49, from Bardsay Road, Liverpool and Stephen Barlow, 47, of Hewitson Road, Liverpool, were arrested in south Belfast last month. All three accused were remanded in custody after appearing before Belfast Magistrates' Court on Monday. They are all charged with conspiracy to rob and falsely imprison the occupants of a house on the Malone Road between April 1-8. It was alleged they plotted to rob the home of multi-millionaire Michael Herbert, whose business interests include Europe's largest chain of Kentucky Fried Chicken outlets.
Security Alert Ends In Dublin
Services are now back on track at Dublin's Connolly Station, which has now reopened following a security alert. A suspicious device was found by a member of the public resulting in the station being evacuated. The alarm was raised after the device was found close to the station on Amiens Street just after 9am. An Irish army bomb disposal team was called to the scene. However, Iarnród Éireann has since said the station had reopened with full services resuming - but subject to delays.

Fisherman Fined
A Co Down fishing boat skipper, Simon Wills, from Ardglass has been convicted at Newtownards Magistrates' Court of contravening Article 6 (2) of Commission Regulation (EC) no.850/98 by fishing with a ballooning net. He admitted contravening Article 16 of Commission Regulation (EC) No.850/98 (as read with Article 6 of Commission Regulation (EEC) No. 3440/84) by fishing with a restrictive strengthening bag. He also pleated guilty of contravening Article 2 (3) of Council Regulation (ED) No.2549/2000 by fishing a net with more than 120 meshes in the circumference. He was fined £500 for each of the first two charges and given a two-year conditional discharge for the third charge. The vessel's owners Tom Wills and K McGowan, both also from Ardglass were fined a total of £150 each.
Racing Certainty
A start up business in Co Antrim, Windflow, is being assisted by Invest Northern Ireland to develop an innovative product that can help racing greyhounds run faster. The small Crumlin company, formed by Michael McPeake last year, has used an Invest NI Innovation Voucher to turn a smart idea into a unique product, a tailored windsock, that can be used as part of the training regime for greyhounds to enhance their performance. The windsock, the outcome of research over three years by Mr McPeake, who has extensive experience in the rehabilitation of dogs from muscle injuries, is made from nylon and neoprene and was developed with advice and assistance from the University of Ulster, a collaboration facilitated by the voucher scheme.
Phill Jupitus For Belfast
Comic Phill Jupitus has announced a DJ appearance at Belfast bar, Love and Death this May. Known for his witticisms on music show Nevermind the Buzzcoks and solecisms on QI, Phill Jupitus is a known music lover and frequenter of DJ tours throughout the UK. Currently touring with Monty Python's musical comedy Spamalot, Phill will be in Belfast next week also playing King Arthur in the Grand Opera House production. A spokesman for the club said: "It gives great delight to announce that Phill has agreed to do one of his legendary Whistle Stop sets at Vice in Love and Death Inc on Thursday 19th May."

£2.75m Victorian mill restored to former glory
A former Victorian linen mill in north Belfast has been brought back to its former glory following a £2.75 million refurbishment. The fully restored Lanyon Building situated in the Jennymount estate off York Road will be used as office accommodation and was opened at a ceremony on Friday April 12 by the Minister for Social Development, Nigel Dodds.

Pork Processing Factory Forced To Close
Stevenson's has announced their food processing plant in Cullybackey is to close. It is understood that up to 100 jobs will be lost. A statement released by the company blamed increased trading costs and adverse business conditions for the factory shut down. The statement said: "The price we pay for pigs has risen by £32.
