Progressing Success

Lorraine Johnston, Customer Services Manager of Progressive Building Society's Coleraine Branch is pictured with the Society's coveted Branch of the Year Award. Lorraine received the news she had won this award when she attended the Society's Annual General Meeting recently, which this year took place in the Killyhevlin Hotel, Enniskillen. The Award goes to the best branch team judged over a wide range of criteria.

Maskey For West Belfast

The Sinn Fein MLA for West Belfast Paul Maskey has been selected to run for the Westminster seat in the by-election which has been set for the 9th of June. "Last year Gerry Adams as MP for West Belfast took the very courageous step to stand for election in Co Louth, with the commitment to challenge the economic malaise that the 26 counties is facing. He was returned there along with 13 other Sinn Fein TDs. "Obviously if elected I will seek to continue the work that Gerry Adams has carried out on behalf of the people of West Belfast since 1983 when he was first elected," said Paul Maskey, who is a brother of party colleague, Alex Maskey, also an MLA.

Arson Alert

Police in Magherafelt are appealing for information after an incident of arson in the Leckagh Drive area this morning at approximately 3.40am. It was reported that a van and car were set on fire close to residential premises and the NI Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene. Anyone who has any information or who saw anything suspicious is asked to contact police at Magherafelt on 0845 600 8000. Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their detaills, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Car Dealer Pays Compo

In a case brought by the Trading Standards Service of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment, William Vance (Junior), of Nelson Drive, Londonderry, has this week pleaded guilty to three charges under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008. The court also imposed a compensation order of £750. The case was the result of a consumer complaint to the Trading Standards Service. It was alleged that a car sold by Mr Vance Junior had been falsely described as a Mitsubishi Evo 8, when it was not. The Trading Standards Service investigation discovered that the car did not have a Mitsubishi Evo 8 engine, had travelled at least 27,000 miles more than was indicated on its odometer and had previously sustained significant damage.

Invest NI Backs Network

One Industrial, a collaborative network formed by three NI specialist engineering companies to offer a turnkey service in the construction, installation and maintenance of renewable energy plants has been created. The collaboration between Axon Power and Control, Eurofab Structural Engineering, both Dungannon, and Pipesketch in Londonderry was announced at the All Energy Show in Aberdeen on 18th and 19th May. The three companies are among a 13-strong delegation on the Invest Northern Ireland stand at the show, with Tracy Meharg, Invest NI's Managing Director of Innovation and Capability Development, commenting, "This is an important strategic initiative by three local companies which have identified the extent of new business opportunities particularly in renewable energy generation and have combined to maximise the potential of their extensive expertise and experience. The companies have teamed up to provide one accessible point of contact that will deliver end-to-end installations, commissioning, operations and maintenance."

West Belfast Gets Jobs

The NI Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster has congratulated west Belfast business development agency, Ortus, for supporting 100 new business starts over the past 12 months. Ortus is one of two agencies responsible for delivering the Invest Northern Ireland Go for it programme in the west Belfast area. The programme is delivered at locations across Northern Ireland and offers support to individuals starting a business. "Entrepreneurs are the lifeblood of any economy. During what remains a challenging time for all businesses, it is vital that we support and encourage the creation of new businesses and support the growth of existing companies," she said while on a visit. "The 100 new businesses created cover a diverse range of sectors including the creative industries, tradable services and tourism. Many of these companies have the potential to export their products and services which will help them to maximise their contribution to the local economy, and help it to become stronger and more resilient in the longer term."

Bombardier 'Wings It'

Bombardier has begun installing semi-automated jigs at its new wing facility in Belfast to support assembly of the advanced composite wings for the all-new CSeries aircraft. The jigs, fixed machinery that will be used to assemble the primary structural components of the composite wing torque box, are being installed in the second phase of a new, state-of-the-art 600,000 sq. ft. (55,742 m2) manufacturing and assembly facility. The first phase of the new factory, which will accommodate the fabrication of the composite components, was completed on schedule towards the end of 2010. Bombardier's Belfast operation is responsible for the design, manufacture and integration of the advanced composite wings for the CS100 and CS300 jets, including all flight control surfaces and high-lift systems. The primary structural components of the wings will be produced using the unique Resin Transfer Infusion (RTI) process that has been developed by Bombardier Aerospace, Belfast engineers. "The installation of the wing assembly jigs is another milestone that brings us a step closer to producing wings for the CSeries aircraft programme," said Michael Ryan, Vice President and General Manager, Bombardier Aerospace, Belfast.

Heavy Snow Closes Over 80 Schools
Over 80 schools across Northern Ireland have been closed as the heavy snow continues to cause disruption on Tuesday morning. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, as the snow is continuing to affect many roads. Areas which have been majorly disrupted include Lisburn, Castlereagh and Carryduff.

Hundreds Of Jobs Promised At Bombardier
A jobs' boost is set to take-off soon with news from Bombardier Aerospace that a Swedish airline - Braathens Leasing Limited - has placed a firm order for five Bombardier CS100 and five CS300 mainline jetliners. Braathens also took options on an additional 10 CSeries aircraft.
