NI minimum wage helpline is launched
An Independent National Minimum Wage Helpline for Northern Ireland has been launched to provide both employers and employees with help and advice about matters relating to minimum wages.
The Helpline on 0845 6500 207 is a joint initiative between the Inland Revenue and the Northern Ireland Association of Citizen Advice Bureaux, and aims to help raise awareness of the rulings of the National Minimum Wage Act 1998, which became law throughout the UK on April 1 1999.
Speaking at the launch of the Helpline, at Queen’s University Belfast, Employment Minister Dr Sean Farren said: "The launch of the helpline is timely as the minimum wage rates will increase in October this year. It will prove beneficial with correct information being readily available and benefiting those involved in employment relations issues.
When the new increases in rates come into effect, the minimum wage for those over 21 will be increased to £4.10 per hour. For 18-21 year olds the rate will be increased to £3.50 per hour. (CL)
