Connaught Telegraph Strike 'Off' Pending Talks
Seven members of the Unite trade union have suspended industrial action at the Connaught telegraph newspaper pending talks taking place this week involving the trade union, management and the regional Newspaper Printers Association.
The workers had been advised that pre-press production in Castlebar was being shut down and their roles outsourced.
The seven individuals have over 200 years combined service and had already reduced their working week to three days and their take home pay by a significant amount to ensure survival of the paper first published in 1828.
Unite is seeking to replicate agreements reached with publishers of the Mayo News when local jobs were saved last year in similar circumstances. A similar situation at the Mayo News was averted last year when staff agreed to a restructuring of the way they worked. This resulted in the maintaining of a number of the jobs at that newspaper in Westport. Management has agreed that all work will halt in relation to the connection to the installation of fibre optic lines that would have been essential for the outsourcing to proceed.
“We are entering these talks in good faith with a view to keeping these jobs in Castlebar,” said Unite Regional Officer Claire Keane.
“A local newspaper running a campaign to ‘Shop local, stay local’ owes it to the town to explore every avenue to support local jobs.”

Local BT Workers Escape Cuts
It has been revealed that excellent profits for BT's operation locally will mean no major job cuts for NI staff. The telecom giant as a whole announced losses of £134m and said it planned to cut 15,000 jobs. However, for the 2,600 BT employees in Northern Ireland, the company has better news.
