Nortel to announce more job losses at Monkstown plant
Telecommunications company Nortel is expected to shed up to 50 jobs in Northern Ireland.
The jobs are expected to go at Nortel’s Monkstown factory in County Antrim following a decision by Nortel to contract out part of its business.
Nortel has signed a deal with American company SCI systems to supply printed circuit boards, which means they will no longer be made in Northern Ireland.
An official spokesperson for the company said: “We can confirm that there are around 50 people who work in that quarter in Monkstown. However we have entered into a consultation period with the employees and their representatives to see if we can minimise the impact of the job losses.”
Having announced a loss of $385 million in the first quarter of this year, the firm said they were cutting 15,000 jobs across their offices worldwide.
Nortel has announced around 800 job losses in the province as a result of the downturn currently hitting telecommunications companies throughout the world. The company have already announced jobs cuts five times this year, which have seen the Monkstown workforce fall from a peak of 2,400 employees to less than 1,600.
The plant makes telecommunications transmission equipment and has been a market leader in the provision of fibre optic equipment. The Newtownabbey operation is Nortel’s largest optical systems house in Europe.
Earlier this year, the firm won the Northern Ireland Exporter of the Year award. (AMcE)

Fears are growing that further jobs will be cut at Nortel Networks' Monkstown plant. The parent company in Canada has revealed another phase of restructuring which could see around 3,500 jobs being lost worldwide. This latest news follows another set of disappointing results from their company's fibre optics operations.

Large Scale Job Losses Is 'Major Blow'
Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster said today that the potential large-scale job losses announced by FG Wilson is a major blow to the Northern Ireland economy. The Minister said: "This is devastating news for the hundreds of families who will be affected, particularly when so many people are already struggling in this difficult economic climate.
