Latest Shankill Murder Arrest

Another man has been arrested in connection with the murder of Bobby Moffett on the loyalist Shankill (pictured) in May 2010. The 26-year-old was detained in the Antrim area on Wednesday morning as the PSNI probe into the violent death of the former loyalist prisoner - who was shot in broad daylight - continued. Last Saturday, another man was freed after being questioned in connection with the murder.

Army Shooting Wrong, Says HET

A young man shot dead by the Army in August 1971 was innocent, a report by the Historic Enquiries Team (HET) has said. The victim, Billy McKavanagh, 21, was shot in the back as he ran away when confronted by soldiers in the nationalist Markets area near Belfast city centre, the report said. Despite the conclusions, the soldier responsible maintains that the person he shot was armed.

Kids Blasted

Four youngsters suffered minor injuries when a gas canister exploded in a fire they had lit in the Newtownabbey area yesterday. The children, all aged 12, were taken to hospital where they were treated for burns to their faces, heads and necks following the incident in Rathcoole. The ambulance service has appealed to parents to educate their children on the hazards of putting any sort of canister on fires.

Alleged Robber Bailed

A man from Newtownabbey who is accused of robbing a pensioner of thousands of pounds was granted bail at Belfast Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, August 9. Taxi driver, Terence Matthew Boyle of Hightown Park is accused of robbing the 88-year-old man on July 15. The 41-year-old was granted bail by District Judge Harry McKibben and is due to appear in court again on August 16. The case is thought to be in relation to an incident outside Tesco, Carnmoney Road, when the cash was said to have been snatched from the elderly victim.

Barroom Breaches

Two Belfast bar owners have been fined for breaches of the terms of their entertainment licences, following prosecutions brought by Belfast City Council. Fergal McVeigh, licensee of The Roost Bar in Church Lane, was fined £800 for overcrowding at his premises on 30 January and 17 April this year. Mr McVeigh also was ordered to pay £78 in costs. Tina Calder, of Ma Nelson's, on the Lisburn Road, was also fined a total of £1,250 for three offences. She was fined £500 for an obstructed fire exit, £250 for the fire alarm system not working properly, and a further £500 for final fire exit doors being locked with a padlock. All the offences were detected on 6 November 2010. Ms Calder was also ordered to pay £69 costs.

Jackpot!

Two lottery wins have yet to be claimed by ticketholders in Co Down. In May, £90,660 was won by someone who bought a ticket for the draw on 28 May. The winning numbers were 2, 3, 17, 23, 40, 43 and the bonus ball was 31 while someone else is unaware they are £186,162 richer. In this case the ticket was for the draw on 27 July and the winning numbers were 4, 16, 22, 34, 39, 42 and the bonus ball was 35. The May prize money can be claimed up until 24 November, the deadline for the July win is 23 January.

Get Careers Advice Call

Dr Stephen Farry, the Minister for Employment and Learning, has encouraged students waiting for exam results to make use of the professional advice and guidance available from the Careers Service. Speaking at the Careers Resource Centre in Belfast, he said: "This is a difficult time for many students and their families as important decisions have to be made. I would encourage each student to take time to consider their options," he said, noting that students and parents can explore the options at www.nidirect.gov.uk/results and find details of how to contact an adviser directly.

School Extension Planned

Expressions of interest tenders are currently being sought for a £440,000 extension to St. Killian's College in Carnlough in Co Antrim. The project, being managed by Belfast-based Gregory Architects, calls for a new mobile classroom accommodation for the school.

Four Benefit Cheats Caught

Four people were convicted at Craigavon Magistrates' court this week for claiming benefits they were not entitled to. Lee Hughes (29) of Deeny Drive, Lurgan was fined £200 and ordered to pay court costs of £38 for wrongful encashment of Income Support totalling £238. Andrew Barrington (29) of The Meadows, Moira was fined £250 and ordered to pay court costs of £19 for wrongful encashment of Jobseekers Allowance totalling £247. Ryan Conlon (28) of Malcolm Road, Lurgan was given a four month prison sentence suspended for two years, fined £199 and ordered to pay court costs of £38 for wrongful encashment of Jobseekers Allowance totalling £120. Andrew Craven (34) of West Street, Portadown was fined £120 and ordered to pay court costs of £38 for wrongful encashment of Jobseekers Allowance totalling £116. All are also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

Benefit Frauds Face Court Sanctions
Fraudsters are being made to pay the price for claiming a variety of benefits they were not entitled to. A total of 14 people were convicted at Belfast Magistrates' court yesterday with Joanne McBride (35) of Portallo Street, Belfast claiming Income Support totalling £4,451 while failing to declare she was working.

The SDLP has backed calls for a full independent inquiry into a new Maternity and Children's Hospital in Belfast. Opposition Health Spokesperson Colin McGrath MLA said it was key to understanding the reasons for spiralling costs on the project.

Two Convicted Of Benefit Fraud
Two people were convicted at Belfast Magistrates court for claiming benefits they were not entitled to. Gerard Browne, 29, of Summerhill Drive, Belfast was given 12 months probation and ordered to pay court costs of £22 for wrongful encashment of Incapacity Benefit totalling £377.
