Other NI News In Brief
Europa Defies Bombers
There's a birthday being celebrated shortly with Hastings Hotels putting on the world première of the BBCTV documentary 'The Europa Hotel - Bombs, Bullets and Business as Usual'. Made by Holywood-based Waddell Media the one-hour programme highlights the history of Belfast 1971 - 2011 as seen through the eyes of the hotel once dubbed 'Europe's most bombed', its experiences and its people. Even the infamous Penthouse Poppets are to be on hand with 70s style Pimms cocktails for guests.
Summit On Heritage
Northern Ireland's first ever heritage crime summit is to take place on Monday, as the number of listed buildings damaged by fires reaches 12 in the past four months. Sites including Herdman's Mill in Sion Mills and Hilden Mill in Lisburn have been completely destroyed in blazes since the start of April. The Stormont Environment Minister Alex Attwood says he's bringing the 'key players' together at Hillsborough Court House on Monday to discuss the problem. The meeting will include delegates from a number of statutory and emergency agencies, district councils and historical societies after the SDLP's Mr Attwood said he wants to do everything he can to help protect the built heritage from destruction.
Great Escape
Two youths have been rescued from a stolen boat off the coast of Cushendall after the thieves got into difficultly after they took the vessel out to the water just after 11am on Sunday. A member of the public, who was fishing at the scene, alerted Belfast Coastguard and the red bay lifeboat, who brought the youths back to the shore who then ran off.
Busy Weekend For Rescuers
Three separate incidents on Saturday kept the emergency services busy on the mountains of NI. A 23-year-old woman with breathing difficulties was airlifted to hospital from the Sperrins and later a hill walker was airlifted from Slieve Donard with a suspected broken arm. After being refuelled the aircraft then flew to Slieve Binion to rescue a 62-year-old with a suspected broken ankle.
City A&E In Focus
South Belfast MLA Jimmy Spratt has responded to renewed reports about Accident & Emergency (A&E) services at Belfast City Hospital. "There are reports today relating to the Accident & Emergency unit at the City Hospital in the light of predicted staffing pressures later in the year. I have had ongoing discussions with the Minister about this issue and from the outset it was made clear that there would be a full consultation on A&E services across the whole of Belfast. I understand that proposals will be published by the Trust in the next few weeks, and no long-term changes to services will take place unless it is clear that they will be in the best interests of patients," he said. "I will want to be reassured, like many others that the Royal Victoria Hospital will be able to cope with any increased volume of patients, from wherever they may come, but I am also reassured that there is a very bright future for the City Hospital and that no staff will lose their jobs. It has been reinforced to me that the long-term future of the Belfast City Hospital is absolutely secure," he concluded.
Lost & Found
