War Cemetery Shock

An East Belfast DUP Councillor for the Pottinger Area and a member of Belfast City Council Parks Committee has condemned the vandalism of war memorial in Belfast City Cemetery. Cllr Adam Newton said: "This is a appalling act that must be condemned by all right thinking people. There can be no doubt that those who carried out this despicable act are motivated by hatred and sectarianism. This memorial to soldiers of the British Commonwealth is to remember all creeds, colours and backgrounds and those who served and gave their lives for the freedoms we enjoy," he said, urging: "There will be those who know the names of these hooligans and I ask them to give the names to the police so they can be taken before the courts for the damage and offence they have caused." Belfast Alliance Councillor Catherine Curran has also described as despicable the actions of those who vandalised the Commonwealth War Graves Commission memorial at Belfast City Cemetery and has appealed to anyone with information to contact police immediately.

Water Muddied

Northern Ireland Water Ltd (NIW) was fined a total of £1,000 plus court costs of £34 at Craigavon Magistrates' Court this week for two offences of making a polluting discharge to a waterway. On 27 June 2010, a Water Quality Inspector acting on behalf of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) inspected the Waringstown Stream and observed the waterway to be strongly discoloured grey. On further inspection of the waterway the Inspector observed a large dead eel and several smaller fish in a distressed state. The source of the polluting discharge was traced to the Primary Walk Sewage Pumping Station, which is owned and operated by NIW. On 5 July 2010 Inspectors revisited the site following a pollution incident report and observed the Sewage Pumping Station to be overflowing to the waterway. Samples taken on 27 June and 5 July 2010 confirmed that the discharge contained poisonous, noxious or polluting matter, which was potentially harmful to fish life in the receiving waterway. These were significant polluting discharges that impacted the aquatic system in the Waringstown Stream, which is a tributary of the River Lagan, an important salmonid fishery.

Water Award

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development's (DARD) Rivers Agency has received a coveted industry award for its use of geographic information system (GIS) technology. The Agency picked up a Special Achievement Award at the Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri) User Conference in San Diego, California, for its Strategic Flood Map for Northern Ireland. Esri, which develops the world's leading geographic information system (GIS) technology to analyse complex situations, visualize problems, and create plans and solutions, helped develop the map viewer for Rivers Agency to make information about flood risks more accessible. "The SAG Awards highlight extraordinary achievements and efforts to improve our world," said Esri President Jack Dangermond. "Each year I look forward to being part of this ceremony. It is a tradition that means a great deal to Esri and to GIS professionals."
