Ó Muircheartaigh For Presidency?

Well known ex sports broadcaster Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh has announced that he is considering running for the Irish Republic's Presidency as an independent candidate.

Mr Ó Muircheartaigh, (pictured) who retired from broadcasting last year, told RTÉ's Morning Ireland programme that he would make a final decision soon. He said that the would settle the issue on whether or not to run by the end of next week, after consulting with members of his family. The 81-year-old also said that he had been approached by representatives from a number of political parties, but stressed that he would only consider standing as an independent.

He also said that he did not believe that his age would be an impediment to being President when the current incumbent, Belfast woman, Mary McAleese steps down at the end of this year after the maximum two terms of office.
