Arrests Follow Turkish Stab Deaths
Two women from Co Down have been stabbed to death in Turkey.
The victims, Marion Elizabeth Graham and Kathy Dinsmore died on Thursday night.
A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin said it happened in a wooded area near the city of Izmir, about 75 miles from the resort of Kusadasi.
A 17-year-old Turkish youth, understood to be the boyfriend of a daughter of one of the women - who were in their 50s - has been arrested.
There are also unconfirmed reports that two other men, one who is understood to be the teenager's father and another believed to be a taxi driver are helping police with their enquiries.
One woman owns a home in Kusadasi, but her daughter - who is also in Turkey - is not thought to have been present at the time of the attack where all three are believed to have been on holiday.
The women were travelling on Irish passports which is why the Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to the families.
The Ulster Unionist Newry & Armagh MLA Danny Kennedy has expressed his shock at the murders of two women - thought to be from the Newry and South Down area whilst on holiday in Turkey.
"I would like to express my shock at the horrific events which have taken place near the port of Izmir in Turkey resulting in the deaths of two women from the Newry and South Down area.
"This is simply awful news which will cause a great deal of shock and sadness in the local community.
"On behalf of the Ulster Unionist party I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to the families at this awful time and to offer any support and assistance which they may require," he said.
The Alliance Chief Whip Stewart Dickson has also expressed his sympathies following the murder of two women from Co Down in Turkey.
"I would like to offer my condolences to the family and friends of these two women. My thoughts go out to them at this difficult and sad time for them.
"These deaths have shocked their local community, who I am sure will offer the much needed support that the families will require.
"Any death is extremely hard on a family but it must be even more troubling that these two women died in a foreign country far from home," he said.
DUP MLA Jim Wells also expressed his sadness over the murders and said: "I've been on holidays to this area and it's relatively peaceful and safe - this makes it even more tragic."
