The bodies of the two women from NI who were stabbed to death in Turkey last week have been released to their families. Arrangements are being made for the remains of Marion Graham and Kathy Dinsmore to be repatriated to Northern Ireland this week. Last night, Ms Graham's daughter Shannon, son David, and former partner Raymond McGuinness, who were in Turkey, returned home to their Newry homes while a niece and nephew of Ms Dinsmore's are expected to remain in Turkey for another day. Train Doctors In Magee
Sinn Fein Foyle MLA Martina Anderson MLA has been commenting on the current debate on A&E services and said that it highlights the need for an increase in the number of medical graduates. "The problem is the same whether in Belfast, Monaghan, Donegal or Derry. The common denominator seems to be that where the services are either being closed or seriously curtailed is the shortage of Junior Doctors and Consultants," she said. "Sinn Fein has long advocated an increase in the number of medical places available at our universities and particularly for locating a Medical School at Magee University Campus in Derry as part of the much needed expansion of the campus."
MOT Accolade
The NI Environment Minister Alex Attwood has reported that MOT evasion had fallen to its lowest recorded level. He said that a report by the Driver & Vehicle Agency into the levels of non compliance with vehicle testing requirements showed a 0.11% fall on the previous year's figure, down from 4.87% in 2009 to 4.76% in 2010. "This is a very encouraging result which shows what can be achieved by the Department and its road safety partners working together," he said, adding: "The test is a key aspect of the Department's efforts to promote and improve road safety. Research shows that non-compliant vehicles are more likely to be involved in collisions and to be uninsured, so it is in everyone's interest that our efforts to minimise evasion should continue unabated."
NI Otters Protected
Developers were this week being urged to play their part in helping secure the future of the otter population. The Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) has launched a new information booklet, 'Otters and Development', promoting the protection of otters through sensitive development. Their legal protection was a response to rapid declines in populations across the whole of Europe over the last century due to culling, pollution of watercourses, lack of food, habitat loss and hunting for sport and the fur trade. Lisa Maddox Scientific Officer with NIEA said: "They are still threatened by human disturbance, recreation, pollution and habitat loss as a consequence of development," she said, noting that, to ensure that otter numbers continue to improve it is essential that they are fully considered in proposals for development. "The booklet provides basic advice for developers, planning officers and others who may come across otter issues related to planning."
Pitching For Business
