Lord Empey Welcomes 'Demise' Of Dictator

The Ulster Unionist Peer Lord Empey has welcomed the latest news from Libya which all-but confirms that the days of the Gaddafi regime are almost at an end.

Former party leader, Lord Empey (pictured) said: "The people of Northern Ireland should rejoice that the days of Gaddafi are fast drawing to a close.

"This Libyan tyrant was responsible for more death and destruction in Northern Ireland than many of his IRA colleagues.

"It was he who provided training facilities for terrorists and over a period of many years he also supplied boatloads of semtex and other modern weaponry to the IRA, enabling them to murder and maim thousands of people," he said.

"Since 2001 I have been writing to Ministers seeking justice for the victims of Gaddafi's criminal actions," he continued.

"While not yet their responsibility, I am writing to ask the Prime Minister to raise the issue of compensation for the victims of terrorism with the new Libyan government when it is established."

Earlier this week the DUP Deputy Leader Nigel Dodds also praised the progress made by rebel forces in Libya and said the fall of the Gaddafi regime is good news for democracy and a triumph over tyranny.

He said regime change would signal a new phase to the campaign for compensation from Libya over their backing for IRA terrorism.

He said that a standing Parliamentary delegation will continue its work and be engaging with any government which is put in place, adding: "The fall of Gaddafi will not end our campaign.

"We must remember the victims of Gaddafi sponsored IRA terrorism," he said.
